Desperately trying to find the problem with my Focus MK2 2.0 TDCI. Been having this issue for a while but no one seems to know what’s wrong.

When driving the temp gauge shows the car over heating and then gets to a point where it thinks it’s so hot that it put itself into limp mode. And screams at me saying the car engine temp is too high. Although the car isn’t actually overheating. 

It happens out of the blue, so mechanics never see it happening. It only happens on the odd occasion when I’m driving. And then have to nurse it home.

Could it be a temp sensor? Has anyone else seen this or heard of it? Anything I can do or look at?
