Focus tyre speed rating

Featured Replies

Hi

Can anyone tell me where to find the following info please? (I have the owner's manual, but can't see that it's in there. Also I have searched Ford's website pretty thoroughly, and it's not on the door sticker).

a. what tyre speed rating do Ford recommend? Tyre retailers suggest W rating, but I'm not convinced that's right. The tyre size is 215/55/16

b. the top speed of the car as stated by Ford?

Many thanks,

2.0L diesel auto estate 2013 (I think it's 140 HP).

Hello, the tyre speed rating is a bit misleading. It's not just about speed, it actually has more to do with the potential forces that your car might exert on the tyre. These factors are the weight (diesel engines are heavy) the torque as the vehicle pulls away (diesel engines have good low speed torque) and forces that the tyre endures on hard cornering and heavy braking.

Very few normal everyday cars will be able to exceed the speed rating of a "V" tyre at 149MPH, but higher speed rated tyres are commonly fitted to slower vehicles because of the factors I mentioned above.

My 2019 Focus estate 2.0 Diesel Automatic still has its factory fitted tyres which are "W" rated.

Tyre speed rating chart:
Marking on the tyre Speed(km/h) Speed(mph)
H 210 km/h 130
V 240 km/h 149
W 270 km/h 168
Y 300 km/h 186

Update.

As I can't find an answer anywhere, I phoned local Ford dealer whose first response was " I can't tell you what tyres shoud be on your car. But you'll be able to tell from what's on your car at the moment" !!! He didn't seem to realise that a previous owner on a 8 year old car might have put the wrong tyres on. Thought I might get that sort of response, so that's why I posted on here to see if anyone here knew, but it's obviously impossible to find a definitive answer.

Eventually he 'checked' and said I could use V or W rated tyres, so apparently that's the official answer from Ford. Ford main website has no answers, but pushes you towards local dealerships.

It's important to me because the Michelin Crossclimate (which I think would be good) is not available in my size in a W rating.

ETIS shows some tyre sizes but not for all models.  I suspect that's what the dealer checked.  If you PM me your reg I'll check your exact car...but the closest I could find o ebay was a Titanium X 2.0 estate which does originally come with W rated tyres on 17s.

Edit - I've just checked a few on Blackcircles.com - they all appear to be W rated on the 2.0 TDCi estate.  My Mk3 1.6TDCi Titanium was also rated at W on 215/55/16...  It's looking pretty much like they were originally W rated tbh.

As I said above "My 2019 Focus estate 2.0 Diesel Automatic still has its factory fitted tyres which are "W" rated. "

Thanks, but as your car is a higher spec than mine, probably has different tyre size, MAY be 163 HP rather than 140 HP and is 6 years newer, mine might not be the same.

I'm just trying to find out what the designer/manufacturer recommends.
