Difference between 140 Black edition and MK8 ST

Featured Replies

Not sure if this is gonna seem silly or not. But soon, I'm picking up a MK8 ST performance edition however I'm replacing my black edition for this car. Due to lockdown, I couldn't test drive the car so I have to wait to see what the car is like when I actually pick it up. Has anyone owned both cars so I can get perspectives from others as to how much different both cars actually are. Cause I couldn't test drive the car, I'm overthinking about whether the upgrade is worth it or not as the difference in price for me is quite significant. I try to watch YouTube videos on the MK8 ST but its hard to get a rough perspective just from watching videos. Is the upgrade worth it?

Interior will be a big step up from the MK7 to the MK8, Sync 3 is much better! Also the way the power is delivered will probably feel much stronger in the ST and it will handle better too. LED lights on the PE also a good upgrade from the halogens you’ll have on the black edition. I’ve never driven the MK8 ST, but people on the FB owners group always comment how there’s a large gap from the ST-Line to the proper ST.

My wife moved from the Zetec S Red Edition 140 to the new ST3.

A Fiesta is a Fiesta so they all drive similarly, but the interior quality in the ST is up a huge notch compared to the Red Edition 140. Nothing wrong with the 140, it’s just that the ST has improved in the new model.

The performance in the ST is fantastic. 200 PS compared to 140 and it corners like it’s on rails. The 140 still had very good performance for a 1.0 engine though.

The seats in the ST are really snug, so hold you well as long as you are not on the rather large side, where I think they could be uncomfortable. The only downside is the ride. The 140 was reasonably firm but compliant, where the ST is quite a bit firmer.  Also when you first start the ST it’s really low down grunty on tick over, compared to the 140 that was virtually silent.

It all depends what you need from the car. The 140 Black Edition is the equivalent of the ST Line now. They all have Sync 3 which is far easier to use than the old Sync system.

So it just comes down to personal choice.

Hi guys thankyou for your replies. After reading these I feel a bit better about my decision. I'm probably just overthinking it but I'm sure once I drive it I'll love it. I've always thought the ST is a great looking car I think it's more down to the price difference as to why I'm overthinking but after reading your comments it's made me realise there's a lot of technology for such a small car so maybe the price is actually pretty reasonable if you compare to other cars in this price region.

Ian, what's the mpg like in your wife's ST compared to her black edition? In mine I was getting around 38 but I don't always drive so economically so was just wondering what sort of figures it gets. The mpg isn't a main concern though but it is still nice to know how economical the car is.

Obviously it very much depends on how you drive the car, so values are very much speculative.

My wife was getting an average of 42mpg with her 140.  My daughter now owns it and is getting around the same figure.

My wife is averaging 34mpg in her ST, so an 8mpg decrease. Judging by your mpg figure for your 140, I would guess you’ll be around 30 in an ST, but if you prat about, I’m sure you could be 25 easily 😉

Thankyou for a good comparison. To be honest even 30mpg with some fairly hard driving isn’t the worst, there are much worse cars out there haha! I do the odd motorway trip as I go back and forth from my university house to my original house so that should keep my mpg up. I usually save the pratting about for the shorter journeys 😂, I think my mpg should be alright cause I’ve seen other people my age drive much worse! I have the occasional blast but most of the time I’m quite sensible so it shouldn’t be too bad. 😂
