Fitting A Subwoofer From Ford Acsessories

Featured Replies

I was in ford today looking at the subwoofers avalible in the acsessories booklet from Ford.

for the Pioneer TS WX 11A(150W subwoofer) its £195.11

For a Pioneer TS WX 77A (200W Sub) its £375.71!

Been looking around on the interweb and the larger one can be got for about £249.99

Iv just rang ford explaining to them what it is, that its in fords own booklet and what not and asked about the price of fitting it. They came back with a quote for £200 =|

Now, I wanted ford to fit it just to be on the safe side but would any competant car audio fitter be able to do it? I dont fancy them damaging my new car.

Any Help appreciated, Thanks

I know a lot of audio fitters won't touch the mk7s, but I'm wondering if the ford acessories sub come with a preout adaptor or processor for the sub, otherwise I'm assuming they use the speaker preouts and that would be pretty crap for sound quality.

The head unit only has speaker-level (i.e. amplified) outputs. This isn't that much of a problem, as that sub supports both RCA (75 Ohm unamplified line/source-level voltages) and speaker-level voltages. The head unit doesn't actually drive the sub, as it has its own amplifier. So you'll also need to run a chunky power cable through to the sub from the engine compartment (probably a direct connection to the battery via an inline fuse).

Having just replaced the speakers in my mk7, I wouldn't say this is a simple five minute job, even for the experienced. The smaller sub would be a bit easier as it goes under the passenger seat, so you only need to run wires under the centre console. To get to the boot you'd need to remove several trim panels along the sills and rear quarters.

I'd hope the Ford supplied versions of the Pioneer subs would include full fitting kits and instructions, but they might not, assuming it's a dealer fit item, not end user installed.

Im going to give them a ring and see how much it would be for them to fit the underseat sub.

Thats a rediculous amount of cash considering for them to buy and fit the whole pioneer speaker/sub upgrade is about £500

Ok, SO, ive bought the Pioneer TS-WX11a 150W subwoofer(though not from ford as its about £50 more expensive than anywhere else) and Ford are fitting it for me for £89. bit expensive but id much rather them do it than me.

Sub' should arrive tomorrow or day after will get it fitted week after id imagine. Will give my verdict on it when I get it.

Might try audio recording before and after to see if you can notice some difference but i wouldnt think so as it will only be as accurate as the mic on my phone..

The mic on your phone ain't gonna pick up and of the extra frequencies of the sun to be honest.

I know, ah well getting it all fitted on Friday at ford, as well as them fixing a few minor probs me having the alarm in has caused. like seatbelt light not flashing and lights on warning chime not chiming

get adobe audition on a laptop and sit in the car recording 1 min of one song at say level 10 and the same 1 min piece at say vol 15 and creen shot the frequency and spectral analysis. ideally need a fairly decent mic but i'm sure you could still guage the results well enough using the mic on your laptop :)

I will do, il assume we can get a ffree trial of some sort.

*Goes to Google*

You should consider fitting the pioneer door speakers as well, ive fitted them in mine and they have improved the sound quality

  • Author

I heard someone that got the full set had problems with the rears, saying they werent as good as the standard ones. How much did it cost you and did you get the underseat sub aswell?

Thanks

No subwoofer, i just did the fronts. To get into the rears, you have to remove the seatbelts to get the rear door panel off so i decided not to.

speakers - £80

adaptors - £40

sound deadening - £30

so about £150

Il see how it sounds as its stands. and then next week when I get paid spolsh more money on my car lol. Are the claims that upgrading the speakers/sub wont change the bass cut off/distortion as its the headunit not the speakers sustained? Or have you noticed a good improvment in the high and low range response

Thanks

i looking into the pioneers as a recent liking on my behalf of dubstep has made me want BASS :) not looking at a sub yet think its a bit too far yet saying as my mum still uses my car, but do you still get the power fading when you turn stereo up loud with the pio's??

God nico, Ive randomly last month or so got into dubstep, its Becomming more "mainstream" I think now. More ears are listening to the sound of Proper Drum n Bass and Dupstep.

  • Author

Oh and Nico, if you think the Sub is too much for mother, theres a wired remote contol that sets various settings on it etc to turn the bass down

yeah you get a 30 day unlimite features trial.

will end up with something like this:

tone_frequency_analysis.gif

which would clearly show the effect of adding the sub.

i'd use blackman instead of 'hamming' for a more all round analysis.

spose its a little bit geeky but interesting none-the-less

I heard someone that got the full set had problems with the rears, saying they werent as good as the standard ones.

Having just replaced my speakers, I really can't believe you can buy a lower quality set of aftermarket speakers than the original fit rears. I tested them out on the bench after removing them, and while I know speakers never sound great in 'free air' these were particularly poor. The construction is very lightweight, with a small magnet and voice coil and for a coaxial there isn't really a proper tweeter. The replacements I used required some work to fit (I made my own baffles and put some effort into sound deadening) and are high-end Pioneers (TS-E1702i coaxials in the back and TS-E170ci components in the front). I think the only way you could make replacements sound worse than the originals is if you made a complete hash of installing them.

Yeah its inteeresting, not that geeky, we people like to have facts to back up what we think/feel.

And I belive that generally aftermarket speakers would of course be better. But I dont think the originals are bad at the moment for what I need. The only thing they where/are missing is some more bass, or more to it, something to take the job of Bass away from them.

I will proberly upgrade the rest of the audio at some point

God nico, Ive randomly last month or so got into dubstep, its Becomming more "mainstream" I think now. More ears are listening to the sound of Proper Drum n Bass and Dupstep.

yes!!!! haha i always been into songs with massive bass lines on them from when i use run about DJin at parties :P but wish i knew dubstep in my early days :(

Oh and Nico, if you think the Sub is too much for mother, theres a wired remote contol that sets various settings on it etc to turn the bass down

either way i think her taste for john denver aint gonna be a hit for the sub!!!

Well I bought the sub on tues I think. It was dispatched vai 24h courier(citylink . . . Didnt know that until after paid) I rang up on thus to see where my package was and the shop advised me that City link had lost my parcel and it was the last one in stock. Not impressed. So i got my money back. Going to wait until next month now. Might have a look into the speakers while im at it, Id like to hear others thoughts on them as well.

Ok, So ive bought another Sub, Same Sub, different company from ebay, £4.87 cheaper too, winner. HOPEFULLY this will arrive tomorrow or the day after also. Im not going to book it in anywhere until it arrives though.

(I get paid tomorro so thats classed as next month, im only a day early, the money was just in my paypal so yano wanted to get rid :P)

I gots it doone yaay! Sounds excellent really has some power to it to say it's only 150w max well worth the money. Headunit stil distorts/cuts the speakers after between 19 and23 anything over 20 usually is pointlessbut the bass response stays firm and undistorted. Wellworth it if you enjoyyour music. Female passengers ethier really like it or won't sit down properly...;)

will try get another adobe sound recording too

Get some pics too mate!
