New owner of a 2018 ST-Line! What should I know?

Featured Replies

Hi all!

I have not posted here much. This should now change though 😀

I'm a big Ford fan and I have waited a long time to get something I want to put my pride into again. I'm hoping this new ST-Line will serve me well...

What can you all tell me about the MK8? Any major flaws, common faults etc?

I'd like to add a few visual mods later on aswell. A suttle body kit maybe like one Maxton Designs offers but will look at other options. What common mods do owners do?

Thanks in advance people!

Lol it might have been better to ask that question before  you bought one!

There are loads of threads in the Fiesta forum about common issues. Massive thread about GPS issues on early versions of Sync 3, lots of comments about squeaks/rattles from speakers, door cards, pipes vibrating underbonnet, etc. There have been a fair number of headlight bracket breakages also.

Not that much of a major mechanical nature, though the odd mention of gearbox problems has come up, several comments about less than brilliant gearchange.

Hopefully on a 3 year old car most things should have been sorted under warranty by the previous owner(s).

You don't mention if you have petrol or diesel, but I assume it's an Ecoboost. You may have seen reports of oil pressure issues which seems to be linked to degradation of the wet belt, particularly where oil changes have been neglected. In light of this many Mk 8 owners do not trust the current extended service regime and have kept up oil/filter changes on at least an annual basis.

My own car which I've had from new has been good as gold apart from a less than slick gearchange (which has improved with time) and GPS problems early on, and even that seems to have resolved itself, no idea how/why, though!

Most people seem to be happy with the ST-L looks-wise, it already has a subtle bodykit! Swapping the rear bumper valence for an ST one to permit fitting a twin pipe exhaust is fairly popular, though.

The only major issue of the ecoboost engine is corrosion from the turbo coolant pipes. So I'd check them before purchase.

I have not had any problems with my 2018 ST-line X in my ownership. I obviously don't know if the first owner had any.

Yes, there are some shockers in that thread but (without going through it all again!) I can't remember anyone having the issue with the Mk 8.

Looks good.  I don't think there are that many common or major faults with the mk8.

Thanks for the detailed post!

I understand what your saying about asking this question before buying but from my experience, no car is without it’s faults. I just wanted to keep my eye open for anything I maybe able to get sorted before the warranty expires.

It’s a Petrol Ecoboost 100ps I think? That’s what the label says inside the drivers door anyway, unless I’m looking in the wrong place 😅

For me, I’ll probably service it annually regardless of what the book says. I’ve always tried to maintain this habit on any vehicle.

No, that's the right place.

Annual service (or at least oil/filter) is a good idea I think, particularly if you're planning on keeping the car a while. I've had the "convenience check" in years 1 and 2 and negotiated a price to include oil/filter change at the same time, full service in year 2 as normal.

Hope you enjoy the car! Good colour btw - here's mine after picking it up just over 3 years ago (in a blizzard, just what you want collecting a new car!) 😀

The red is a nice colour, but I wasn’t offered much choice. The dealer had three other red ones in stock and a white one which was a few grand more than my budget.

I am a little worried about the red fading but I’m hoping this was more of a common issue on older cars. I’m sure if I keep it clean and waxed regularly, I shouldn’t have too much of a problem.

I wouldn't worry. Mine's not seen much wax in 3 years but still comes up very nicely after a wash! But you're right, many years ago, red was notorious for fading if not waxed regularly.

I had a red Fiesta and, at 4 years old, it showed no sign of fading.   As far as I know it had never been waxed.   Always looked great after a wash.

I thought it was true for all ecoboost engines. I've spotted a very small bit of corrosion on my turbo coolant pipes on my car.

On newer models of Mk7.5 onwards the pipe material was changed for one that doesn't appear to rust like the earlier pipes did.

I had a 17 plate StLine mk7.5 and this had no corrosion whatsoever on the pipes in just over the 2 years or so I had it. Nor have any of the Mk8 StLine X models we have owned.

How are you finding the car Troy ? Looks a cracker in a great colour. I’ve been looking for ages at changing my Astra for a fiesta or similar (Ibiza FR) and now that things are settling down I need to take a trip to local dealer.

I do a few motorway trips so was looking at the 125 version but plenty of 95 versions at my dealer to try as well.

also what’s your mpg so far ? , this is main reason I’m selling a 200hp Astra that mostly does town driving (change of circumstances hence looking for better mpg car).

It’s still early days but so far I’ve been very happy!

Mine will get to motorway speeds comfortably and sit there happily aswell. If I was offered a more powerful version, I’d probably take it but not because I felt it needs it.... it would be simply because it was there, but I personally wouldn’t go out of my way to buy a more powerful one.

I’m averaging 43mpg with its “Eco” button active. mostly short trips like to the shops and school drop-off.

I've had two 17 plate Fiesta Ecoboosts.   One was stolen and the one I have now.   I'm convinced that the material they make the pipes from was changed prior to that year as the pipes appear shinier that earlier models and neither had the slightest trace of rust.

Like Martin and Bob's, my pipes are still spotless after over 3 years. Could you post up a pic in the "Ecoboost engine rust" thread if you get the chance, Jim?

Depending on what age of car you're looking at there's not a lot of difference price-wise between the power outputs. When I got mine the 140 was only £800 more than a 100 at list price new before discount, or about the cost of one of the pricier paint options. The gap has widened on more recent cars though, I assume because of the extra costs of MHEV, and the gap between 95 and 155 new is now about £1465 at list.

I dropped about 40ps/70Nm from my previous Leon FR and I do notice the difference in certain circumstances, particularly when driving in hilly areas such as the Yorkshire Dales or over the North York Moors for example. Motorway, dual carriageway, town driving is absolutely fine and "twisty bits" are great fun!. As ever, personal priorities differ but as many test drives as possible are always a good idea.

From courtesy cars I've driven, the Ibiza is a very decent car, only available now with 95 and 115ps 1.0 triples, but there was a very short lived 1.5 with 150ps. (There's also a normally aspirated 1.0 with 60ps iirc, my wife has one in her SEAT Mii, but I wouldn't want one in an Ibiza!) The VW turbo triples are good though, they feel a little more "torquey" lower down and the Ibiza is a little more spacious than the Fiesta.

Thread after thread on here about mpg, everyone's circumstances differ. Overall, I get around 45 from the 140, most I've ever seen from a tankful was 53. My Leon gave very similar mpg under the same pattern of driving.
