2006 1.6 Zetec S GEM replacement....Help please!

Hi all, new here and trying to sort my son's car for him...

MOT failed on airbag light on dash. Have been round the houses and through the mill but at last a Ford diagnostic has indicated that the GEM is not communicating and needs replacing. I assume that repairing the GEM is not an option? And I can't justify a new part as that's been quoted as £800 fitted. Can anyone please offer guidance on sourcing and replacing with a second hand part. Will there be issues with communication with rest of the car? Will anything else need replacing to match it, or need re-tuning/calibrating in some way?
