Remove engine management light

Featured Replies

Strange question but is it possible to remove the engine management light?

My car had a engine malfunction today putting me in limp mode twice, after turning the car off and back on it got me back home but the engine management light never came on so I did an LED check and it doesn’t light up! I bought the car months ago and now I’m starting to think I’ve been driving round with the light on but they’ve done something so it doesn’t come on.

Sounds like someone has disabled it. It should also come on for a few seconds when you switch the ignition on, if it doesn't then I'm sure that is a major MOT failure too.

Thanks for the reply pal,

I didn't think you could disable it but clearly they have! Don't suppose you know how to enable it?

Thanks.

They may have taken the Instrument Cluster out and physically removed it or blanked it off. I doubt very much there has ever been a legal way of making it not come on but someone may know differently.

If it has been programmed out (if that is possible) then it would be best to try to speak to someone from the dark side of cars who does that kind of thing to see if they can reverse it.

Is it possible they have just removed the bulb or is that too easy of a fix haha

Back in the days when "mileage adjustment" by screwdriver or Black and Decker were in vogue, that certainly did happen!😀

They don't use bulbs any more. They are surface mounted LED's soldered direct on to a PCB. If you remove the instrument pod from the dashboard and then take it apart you will probably find that they have stuck a small piece of black electricians tape over the LED, or if they wanted to go the whole way then they have removed the LED.

Thanks I will take the cluster apart tomorrow, see what shardy antics they’ve done.

Now, a friend of mine (an electrician by trade) got an old car of his through the MOT a few times by a bodge! He wired up the engine management light to a timer, so it switched on for about 5 seconds on being activated by the ignition, then switched itself off! I'm not condoning such action (😋), but it can be done...
