Tips for removing oil filter without getting oil down your arm...

Featured Replies

Got round to servicing today, air filter easy; pollen filter easy (though the plastic screw did nothing - but now I know how clip works).

Oil drained no mess.  But the oil filter....  I'd hoped at the angle it was most oil would've drained - but oh no - despite a rag under oil leaked out over my arm and down the sump.  Bit of a mess, all cleaned up.  Previously, I've had oil filters that are either "vertical" or there is nothing for oil to drip on, so its not a problem, but this one was a bit messy.  (Fortunately had drive covered in case!)

Any tips for next time?

New filter on, new oil in, and new sump plug - nice n easy.

Just plugs to do now - annoyingly they are 14mm and I only have 16mm plug socket, so new 14mm one arriving imminently.

(Well worth the £90 service kit!)

Keep your wrist above the filter while unscrewing and it shouldn't run down your arm.  Then quickly tip it upright when it comes off the last thread, still keeping your hand above the bottom.  Can't really stop the dribble down the block though, some filter designs just are a bit messy.

I was doing it from underneath on ramps, so can it be reached from the top?  Or I may need steeper ramps (using campervan "levellers" which aren't overly tall, and the ST-line is low - I only just got under!!)

The wife's Marigolds with the wrist folded back will stop it running up your arm, but don't tell her.

Was it the Pinto engine, or Cologne V6 where the filter was mounted horizontally so as soon as you started unscrewing it would run down the block ?

Seriously, I hope you wear gloves anyway ?

Sounds like a bit more space underneath would help.  You need to be able to bend your arm to get your wrist in the right place.  In theory it can be done from above on the 1.0EB but I don't there's enough access space on the Fiesta.

The fiesta was almost horizontal!  (1.0 140)  So yes, dribbled before it started.

Yes, wore gloves but even so 🙂

Loosen the oil filter.Pull a plastic bag over the filter then undo the filter whilst it’s in the bag👍
