Are Ford making new cars?

Featured Replies

I ask this above because I went into the Ford dealership to order a new Ford. I was told it could take around 16 weeks as they can't get the parts from China.

I believe Ford have been on a four day working week so I don't know when I will get my new car.

Is it true that they can't get parts?

It’s a huge issue across all the manufacturers, it’s the limited supply of microchips as far as I’ve read.

There are loads of companies with thousands of cars physically built, but they don’t have enough chips to finish the build.

I don't know if it was just BS but the Toyota salesman told me that just before last year's lockdown Toyota bought a load of the chips needed so they haven't struggled to make new cars.

I also wonder if the new Euro legislations and quotas will affect the Fish too as they compliment the chips very well with mushy peas salt and vinegar........

Thanks Nismex, I wonder when they'll get a good supply of chips to finish off the car I ordered.

Probably hoarded all the pasta and loo roll as well! 😮

I've read the same thing online a few times though, so not just sales BS.  Toyota had a major chip loss a few years ago which prompted them to carefully consider supply chains and have plans in place for exactly this scenario.

VW alone apparently "lost" 100,000 cars in 2020 due to chip shortage. Trouble is, the number of chips required in a car keeps increasing exponentially, whether it be due to safety mandated stuff or all those essential gadgets that us wrinklies were perfectly able to live without years ago. I've read that the Nissan Qashkai, for instance, has 50% more chips than the previous version.

Also seen that Stellantis group are changing components to reduce chip requirements - installing analogue instruments instead of digital in some models for instance - at least temporarily.

If it's got that many chips in it perhaps Nissan should of renamed it Quashkoi 🐟 🐟

I have on ordered a Fiesta Vignale 125ps mhev 7sp DCT auto on the 1st April current estimate is delivery to dealer 18th Sept. 25weeks wait.

It's not so much parts in general, but almost certainly down to one specific type of part. Computer chips.

There's a global issue with computer chip supply atm. It isn't just the car industry that's suffering. We're seeing the same issues with games consoles, graphics cards, TVs, phones, etc... Some being more readily available than others, but it's an issue that's hitting electrical goods markets across the world. Though reportedly, the automotive and industrial sectors have been hit far worse because they don't have priority chip orders, often using legacy technologies.

It wasn't aided by the fact that these same industries also essentially fobbed off semiconductor manufacturers and told them to take the burden of the risk, so manufactures further prioritised other products that would be moving (I.E hardware destined for computer/games console/smartphone manufacturing/cloud computing/etc...)

Experts are saying the shortage could last till mid-2022 to 2023 (guess I won't be upgrading my PC for another ~2 years then)

Toyota, as well as other Japanese firms (both automotive and semiconductor firms), are generally a bit more used to bumps such as this as they know vaguely what to expect from experience with tsunamis and Earthquakes that've plagued that area of the world.
