Focus mk2.5 instrument cluster.

Featured Replies

Hi can anybody help me, I have a 2008 focus zetec with 63,000 miles the problem I am having is just recently The instument cluster lights are taking around 10 to 15 seconds to display after switching ignition on, it used be instant when I turned on ignition. I can't operate the electric windows until they come on, also when refueling the low fuel light stays on and the range does not change for at least 30 minuts and the check engine light takes upto 30 seconds to go out after starting the engine. the car drive perfectly with no problems after the initial switch on and start up.

It sounds like you have a very, unfortunate but common problem. There are numerous issues caused by the Mk2/2.5 instrument cluster all derived from a tree hugger ethos. Ford changed the formula on the solder on these to not include 'lead' which has been used for generations without issue. The new, 'lead free' formula worked fine initially, but over time, the solder joints dry up and cause numerous different faults.

The 'good' news is it's relatively easy to fix in that the instrument board on the cluster needs new solder applied. Lots of 'Ebay' sellers advertise a send and repair service, and a google search may even return someone local to you offering same. There are numerous YouTube videos too of the issue - just search, 'focus cluster problems'

Welcome to the forum...

Before blaming the instrument cluster the voltage at the instrument cluster connector should be checked.

The instrument cluster has 3 separate power feeds:

Pin 4 = Ignition switched positive feed from Fuse F114 (10A)
Pin 15 = Ignition switched positive feed while cranking from Fuse F108 (7.5A)
Pin 32 = Permanent positive feed from Fuse F107 (10A)

If one of these power feeds is missing because of a defective ignition switch, defective fuse or defective GEM module the instrument cluster will switch on with a delay.

Since the delay also applies to the power windows (which have nothing to do with the instrument cluster) I expect that there will be a missing power feed.

Thank you StephenFord and JW1982 for your prompt replies.

I have watched a couple of videos concerning the cracked solder joints but discounted that due to everything working fine after the initial delay. JW1982's post seems much more lickly I think. I will check thos fuses first.

Good choice! @JW1982 is far smarter than I ever could be LOL Good luck, and post back if you get it sorted...

I know what an ignition switch is also a fuse but I have no idea what a GEM modul is.

Although it's actually not "just" a fuse box, the GEM is basically the thing that looks like a fuse box in the passenger footwell.

GEM

General Electrical Module, a fancy fuse box and power distribution unit. Replaced on later models with the BCM, Body Control Module, an even more fancy fuse box, with a brain to control things like electric windows, heated seated, etc.

It's actually Generic Electronic Module. Sorry, that's my OCD kicking in.
