Very strange electrical problem 12v outlet

Featured Replies

Mk7.5 fez so I normally charge my phone via the usb but today I decided to use the 12v outlet plugged in all fine then connected it to my iPhone, as soon as I done that I lost all dab signal on my radio, unplugged my phone and the signal came back, I thought maybe the charger was faulty so bought another and the same thing happened, has anyone had this before,????

You are kind of on the right lines. DAB radio signals are as the name suggests 'digital' and are very low power. The 12 volt to 5 volt USB charger contains a little bit of circuit to drop the voltage, normally this is with a DC to DC converter. Internally these converters operate at a high digital frequency, normally this is not a problem on high quality equipment as addtional circuits filter out interferance, but on cheap typically Chinese chargers there are no filter circuits, and the DAB signal gets killed. It is a very common problem with dashcams especially rear mounted ones if the DAB radio uses the rear screen as the aerial.

If you can find a high quality charger (good luck on that) then the problem will go away.

Would a ferrite block on the cable help?

Does your C-Max have the same DAB radio and is the 12 volt socket as close to the radio as on the Fiesta ?

To be honest RF is a strange thing and can effect some things and not others for what seems to be very little reason.

In this instance probably not as the RF is comming from inside the charger, but you are right that the cable pluged in to the charger could be acting as an areial.

No cmax has the Sony dab unit in and is further away, so it must all factor in I suppose, will take them back tomorrow and have a look at one on amazon
