Ecoboost gearbox

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I’m looking to buy a Fiesta, possibly Ecoboost. The price limit would mean we’d be looking at cars in the 2012/-2017 range.

I have read that the gearboxes and clutches have a known issue, could you please tell me if many cars are affected? Should we look for an alternative model?

many thanks

Hi Tracy,

Not sure if anyone can put a number on it but here's a link to one of several threads on the topic:

We had two non-ecoboost cars with that gearbox and no issues. It does seem to have mostly affected the 140ps version, or cars that have been remapped. Can't recall seeing issues on the 100ps version, other than a fairly common complaint about difficulty engaging reverse (that box has no synchromesh on reverse) though again, we had no problem with ours.

My partners had a 2016 fiesta 1.0 125hp  pretty much since new and it's been excellent. All I've changed in that time is one set of tyres last year, a rear coil spring then at 60k this month a set of front pads. Your always going to get the odd "Friday " car regardless of manufacturer or model type.

And of course the Fiesta has been the best seller for many years, so there are a heck of a lot around. Even a relatively high number of failures would still be a small proportion of the total.

Exactly. Alot of people assume the worst esp on a forum where only the faulty ones are talked about and not all the ones with no faults. Forums are generally populated by folk looking for answers to a problem they have

I have a 2014 Titanium X 50K + no problems with Gearbox or clutch. Nice smooth action.

I've had six Fiestas, two of them automatic.   Never had any problems with a gearbox.

I have a 2014 '64' plate titanium x, no problems with gearbox + clutch, only done 23.6k. I have only replaced 2 tyres, keyfob batteries, car battery this week after being on there from new. also service 1 a year + mot.

As mentioned above, the majority of gearbox failures are usually down to folks tuning the engines. This increases the torque output to a higher figure than the gearbox is rated for (hence they don't last very long if you're not careful). No where near as many issues on engines that haven't been modified.
