Speed bumps / wheel realignment

Featured Replies

Hi, over the last couple of years when I'm getting new tyres, the wheel realignment has been a bit off / mentioned. I know it can be due to a variety of reason but just seems to be a bit coinsident to coincide with speed bumps in my area / regular routes.

I thought it was just patter to get more money, but on my latest visit, the inside of the tyres were down to the wire on the inside.

I go over the speed bumps like most people with the edges of the bumps meeting the inner half of the tyres. I've started to go over them now with one side tyre in the middle and alternate. This looks a bit stupid and doesn't seem kind to the axle and other parts of the car though.

Any thoughts how to approach speed bumps? I have always gone slow over bumps and been careful as possible.

Go slow, continue to drive one wheel over if you can safely. And get the wheel alignment checked and corrected regularly. I get mine done every year as I don't want premature wear on my costly tyres (19" Michelin PS4S's).

How are the other components of the suspension on your car? Ball joints, wishbone bushes etc?

Where on Tyneside Craig?  Gateshead council have a nasty fetish with steep angled, hard plastic speed bumps.  Local taxi drivers reckon they're tyre shredders.  I hate the damn things.

As above, slow and not straddling them is the way to go, if possible.

From Wrekenton (near Birtly / Gateshead Angel ish) to Newcastle and High Spen. Aye a good few pot holes too.

Oh I remember that run down to Team Valley, speed humps galore

2012 ? Getting your tracking sorted out is pointless if the car has worn suspension parts, everything is moving all over the place as you drive along.

I'd really check every bush/suspension part on your car, no doubt they are at their end of life !  Any that looks worn/dodgy get them changed, our car is 2010, we've replaced most suspension parts, it gone from a noisy uncomfortable car, to what it was like when we first got it, brand new, it's smooth on the road and going over road humps is a joy, goes around corners as if it's on rails, also had four brand new tyres fitted and had the car fully lazer tracked by a reputable garage.

What we've had to change:

At the back....

Rear bushes in the trailing arms.
Anti squeal bushes.
Springs [rusty at the bottom]

At the front....

Link arms.

Springs [one snapped]

Anti roll bar bushes.
Whole new wishbones with all new bushes.

I take most speed bumps at 10mph, 20 absolute max if it's only a small one. I don't do it to save my suspension, more the fact the front of my car would get ripped off if I went any faster!

I know the Wrekenton/Harlow Green ones only too well, also the ones from the top of Portobello down to Durham Road where they've built all those new houses.  Aren't Gateshead council awesome....

I've got that worry also. 😄👍

😂 A few years ago a car went over a ramp at speed, didn't half go with a scrape & smash, next thing a big long hunk of plastic got spat out the back of the car, driver didn't even know they'd damage the car and carried on, I went in the road and picked up the plastic, plus bits of body coloured parts 😒

There's drivers and screwdrivers, Ian.  Too many on the road these day are the latter, unfortunately.

It used to be my dad's car and had a few parts replaced not too long ago so should be ok. I wouldn't know where to start though.

The tyres were quite deflated mind, not as much as me though when the mrs complained about me taking alternative routes to avoid the speed bumps (only adds 5 mins to the journey, but less scenic!🙄).

Women are like that.

You got a friendly garage that can put it on a ramp for you and have a look?  If you haven't I can point you in the direction of one of the few people I trust these day with my cars, he's in Chester le Street though.

I think the speed bumps are sponsored by Arnold Clark Birtley 🤣  funny how you nearly have to destroy your car getting to the Ford dealership if you go through Birtley.

Don't give the council ideas!! 😄
