MK6 Fiesta steering lock not engaging.

Featured Replies

When taking the key out of the ignition and slightly turning the steering wheel left or right, the steering wheel does not lock on our Mk6.5 Fiesta. From what i have read so far, it could be a faulty detent.

Can anyone tell me if this is accurate and if the "detent" thingy is integrated into the ignition steering lock barell and if i renew it, will my steering lock begin to work.

Not sure how far you need to turn it, if you turn it a complete 360 degrees and it does not engage the lock then I agree there is a problem. But does it matter?  A car thief won’t know your steering lock is iffy.

Very true, I wouldn't worry. In answer to your question of how far to turn, it's every 15 degrees if I remember correctly.

When i insert the car key into the ignition key hole, its quite loose and feels contactless or vague although when i turn it to stage 1, the key doesn't come out if i wiggle it.

So i was thinking of changing the lock and was wondering if this would also cure the steering lock not engaging issue.

I just prefer it to be working even though a potential robber would not know if the steering lock is engaged from the outside.

You can buy a new lock barrel and the little discs that fit inside to key the barrel to match your key from a Ford main dealers. It was sold as a kit (might still be).

Not wishing to cause you alarm but even those with working steering locks on 2007 Fiestas have no real protection. A very strong hard pull on the steering wheel snaps the locking pin on the steering lock. The best line of defence is the PATS security system which prevents the car starting, its not fool proof but beter than the lock.

Probable attempted theft at some point and the steering lock is broken.
