car won't start after dropping tool while reconnected negative and it hit positive side SPARKSPLEASE HELP!!!

Featured Replies

hey guys so need advice i have a fiesta zetec 3 dr 1.4 2005

I was reconnecting negative side of battery due to fitting a new radio into my car, when doing so due to it been warm the tool slipped out of my hand and hit the positive terminal while still connected to negative and sparked. my car will not start after this I have checked the battery and its still reading at 12v I have checked the fuses and there doesn't seem to be any damage to them.

I dont know where to turn next as all electrics in car seem to work fine but the car just won't turn over. when attempting to start it's not really turning over I have tried pumping the acceleration and it seems like it wants to start for a second or two then just goes back to its normal chocking sound.

any help would be appreciated so much

Hi Annie, welcome to the Ford owners Club.

Shorting out the battery terminals in never good but I don't think that will be the real issue with the car not starting.

Without trying to start the car turn the ignition on. Does the Red PATS alarm light, do it's normal thing of going out after a second or two ?

If the security light is out then you are ready to move to next stage.

Please Do Not "pump" the accelerator pedal, it was ok back in the 80's but not for moden engines.

Press the accelerator pedal firmly down to the floor and keep it there. Now try and start the engine, let it turn over for 15 seconds. If the engine fails to start then wait 30 seconds before trying again, all of this time you should be holding the accelerator pedal down to the floor.

If it fails to start after 3 trys then its move on to plan "B"

Disconnect the negative of the battery (carefully please) and leave the battery disconnected for 30 minutes before reconnecting it and try the above again.

Good Luck 👍
