Brake pipe renewal

Featured Replies

Hello, I wonder if anyone has had to replace the full brake pipe set. I have advisory on MOT and have looked to see if a set is available ready made, not necessarily pre bent. There seems to be no problem if you have a "classic car" but doesn't seem to be available for our cars. I just wondered if anyone had come across this before.

That’s a lot of work and then you might have other problems eg snapping a bleed screw. I like to preserve brake pipes so they don’t need replacing. So before the corrosion gets too bad I would clean up with Emery cloth and give three coats of hammerite. They do not usually need doing all over, just in some areas where the coating is going bad.  I would stress that I would never disguise corrosion in this way to get an mot. If the rust affects the safety of the pipe it needs replacing, not disguising. Most brake pipe replacements could be avoided with preventative measures before the rust sets in. If it’s an advisory then the mot tester considers it safe still so preventative measures appear to be in order.
