Bubbles in coolant… advice??

Featured Replies

so i’ve noticed i’m loosing a lot of coolant rapidly and had an engine warning light turn on last week, my friend ran a diagnostic on the car and nothing came back. he turned the warning light off and told me too drive it for now, since then i’ve noticed that i got bubbles in my coolant and noises coming from that area. i’ve done some research and it’s saying it could be a blown head gasket or leading towards one. people are telling me too just get rid of the car, but it’s only just reached 50k miles and only a 16 plate.

does anyone know on what to do from here or how much this would all cost too repair or any advice on what i should do with the car?

A head gasket is either blown or it isn't, no in-between.

I don't really see what this achieves. The dealer (or private buyer) either won't take it off you in that condition, or will just knock the cost of the repair off the price.

Have you checked the inside of the oil cap? If the head gasket has gone then you can get a milky colour on the inside (emulsified oil as it's mixed with water).

You can also get a garage to carry out a sniff test. They remove the cap off the coolant tank and use a machine to "sniff" for hydrocarbons. The only way you'll have hydrocarbons in the expansion tank is from the combustion chamber through the coolant channels. If the level is dropping rapidly then I'd imagine your exhaust is bellowing out white smoke.

BTW a few bubbles from the return line is pretty normal.

Yeah exactly what i was thinking, no point in getting rid of it, there is white smoke but not a lot. checked for the milky colour stuff on the oil cap but there isn’t any, also the bubbles are quite bad too the point where it’s making a gushing sound.

definitely gonna go too the garage and ask for one of those tests, thankyou for this !!
