Light smoke from bonnet driver side

Featured Replies

I brought a 2005 Ford Fiesta it was serviced 2 months ago but was sat doing doing nothing till I brought it, after driving for a good 30 mins I realised a bit of smoke coming from driver side under bonnet and seems to happen when I’ve driven it for a while it doesn’t really have a smell to it and only noticeable when I come to a stand still and disappears after a couple minutes. I’ve looked for leaks checked fluids etc but nothing noticeable any advise/suggestions on what it could be? Thanks

The most likely cause is hot coolant escaping as "steam" (a mix of water vapour and visible water droplets). A small amount of water can generate a lot of visible steam, so you may not notice much drop in the level in the reservoir for a while. I would keep a close eye on the level, maybe mark it somehow.

At that age, and if left sitting for a time, the lid seal could have perished or cracked. A new coolant lid would fix that quite easily if it was the problem.

If it was coolant, there should be a bit of anti-freeze smell, but it is not very noticeable unless you are used to it. Check that the coolant is the right colour, Ford antifreeze is usually a rather vivid pinky-orange colour, and should be quite clear, not cloudy. Worth having it changed if in doubt, antifreeze is a really critical corrosion inhibitor as well as preventing freezing. The Ford stuff is long life, at least 10 years if not contaminated.
