Tapping/Rattling noise on MK3 Focus 1.6 TDCI

Hi,

I have recently noticed a tapping noise with my Focus 1.6 TDCI (2014) when in 3rd gear only when the engine is warm and on deceleration. I hear it more with the windows down and when the revs drop to 1500 or when I dip the clutch, it stops.
Any help will be very much appreciated, thanks.

Sounds like injection over-run and totally normal.

The injectors switch off as you coast down to save fuel.  If you dip the clutch they need to start again to keep the engine idling.   1500rpm is probably the failsafe cut off figure so that it can't stall, especially if you were to brake suddenly.

Your description does sound a little like a gearbox fault (common on these) but as it's only when warm and above a certain RPM, I don't believe it is in this case.

Thanks mate, really appreciate that! It’s only done 30,000 miles so I’m hoping it is the injectors over run and not the gearbox. Fingers crossed, cheers 👍🏻
