Road Noise - 2014 Ecoboost Vs newer Fiesta

Featured Replies

Hello,

My Fiesta is still doing well, with only three technical issues in nearly eight years, the most recent being a turbo inlet tube failing.  However, I am considering a new(er) car at some point in the next 6-12 months. The Fiesta is great to drive, but I do find the road and wind (and sometimes engine) noise a little much at higher speeds. So are the newer models say post 2018 any better?   We have great roads where I live, super smooth etc, so it is not down to the quality of the road surfaces.

As I have posted on other threads, most of my local roads are quite poor, and have been resurfaced by the "surface dressing" method (i.e. chippings spread on wet tar) and left for the traffic to flatten.

Consequently I am plagued by road noise (which also affected my previous cars). There are a few roads around with a proper surface and on these the Fiesta is like a totally different car - very quiet. (I am on 205/45x17 tyres and the ST-Line suspension.)

As you say your local roads are in good condition, you should find the Mk 8 satisfactory.

The 2018+ cars are quieter and more refined than the previous generation as you’d probably expect.

However the MHEV cars are quieter still, Ford have really upped their game.

Hi fiestalux,

Agreeing with the others, I think the short answer to your question is yes - the mk8 is that bit quieter. The improvement is bigger than I expected over my mk7 in some ways - though I'm comparing a 2011 econetic to a 2018 1.5tdci. (I felt the face-lifted post 2012 mk7s were quieter than my 2011 car too).

Also, I've checked through some ADAC road tests of mk7 and mk8 Fiestas as they give interior noise decibel readings (their tests are easily googleable) - on these the mk8s came out as 1 to 2dB quieter at 130kph (!) than the mk7s. The decibel scale isn't linear so this'll be a palpable difference.
