Slow Opening Boot - Already Replaced Struts

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a Fiesta ST Line 2018. The boot is really slow at opening and needs a helping hand to fully open or just sticks half way. I initially assumed it was the gas struts and have replaced these but still have the same problem.

Any ideas please 😊?!

Common Fiesta problem, my daughter's is exactly the same.

No! Not a problem at all. The struts are designed to provide a counterbalance so the boot is easier to close and doesn't knock anybody's teeth out if it slips out of their hand. It also reduces the strain on the hinges and the panel work. It is not supposed to exert a strong lifting force which is why it stops when released but does not drop either. Clever design.

Thats not great! I was hoping there would be a fix and it wasn't just the cars build 🤨

There's nothing wrong with it! It is supposed to be that way. You do not have a problem.

Yes, mine does something similar, though much worse if I leave the boot open with the sun being on the struts. It seems very stiff to close after this situation but wears off to normal operation.

Dealer is having a look at them on next service, November I think, as they said they have had previous issues with some struts. Must be a certain batch maybe?

So if you open the liftgate and let the struts warm up so the gas pressure rises, the liftgate is stiff to close. Constipated, Holmes?

I will let the dealer decide. After all they have said they have had issues with struts before and if they want to change them, they can under warranty.

It still doesn't explain the random stiffness when not in the sun nor does it explain why the Mhev struts don't suffer similarly when exposed to the sun.

Thanks for your obvious input anyway. 🤭

I would loosen the hunges sliggtly and try and grease them more be tightening.

Note the torque settings before loosening if you can and tighten a bit less.

Yeah, a decent idea but it is still under warranty, the dealer can sort it out plus I will only have it around another 6 months or so before swapping.

Temperature changing the gas pressure inside the strut.
