Over-winter Mod Suggestions for Speed Events.

Featured Replies

I have a 2013 ecoboost 100ps that I have used this year in speed events, (hillclimb & sprints), I've attached a pic of the car and added an in-car cam of a run at the bottom of the post.

I've already had a stage 1 Revo map and installed Eibach Pro springs and Toyo TR1 tyres (195/50/R15). Car performs well and is fairly competitive against other cars in the class, (1000cc - 1400cc). Over the winter off-season, I want to add mods to make the events more enjoyable and improve competitiveness. The events are made up of 4 or 5 runs in the day, each consisting of somewhere between 50 - 100 seconds a run, depending on the venue and track length. I may do 1 or 2 track days, so I'm keeping that in mind too.

To be clear, I only want mods to improve actual performance, handling or feel, not any visual only mods. Its my daily driver so want to keep it subtle and discreet . As I am running in 'Road-going Production' class, there are limits to what I can do, I cannot for example strip the interior trim. Here is a wishlist of what I am planning and thinking, any suggestions or additions gratefully received.

High Priority

  • Additional set of lighter wheels with trackday tyres (Toyo 888r for example). Probably sticking with 15" to keep overall wheel weight down. With the right offset, I may be able to go from 195/50 to 205/50.
  • Induction kit up to the stock crossover pipe. To complement the map and improve throttle response, also a requirement for a future Revo Stage 2
  • Swap drivers seat for lighter race seat
  • 'add lightness' where i can within the rules. I already take out the spare wheel, jack etc during events

Lower Priority

  • Replace fog lights with ducts and pipe kit pointed to the front brakes. This would be to keep them cool for any track days I would like to do next year
  • Maybe bonnet vents, to improve airflow in engine bay for cooling benefits?
  • Rear ARB, not sure if this is necessary, the car feels very planted already, but think it might be worth trying.
  • Replace induction crosspipe and hoses up to the turbo. Not sure if this gives real world benefits to throttle response or just for looks and noise.
  • Exhaust, probably miltek, resonated with standard CAT. mainly for Revo stage 2, and resonated to meet noise regs at events
  • FMIC, again, mainly for Revo stage 2 as these short runs dont build lots of heat, but would be useful for any future track days
  • Revo Stage 2
  • Final drive swap to 4.09 or 4.25. Mine has 3.61 which is too long for events
  • LSD, done at the same time as a final drive swap

If I had the funds, but dont.

  • Gearbox conversion to stronger 6 speed
  • Hybrid turbo
  • Bigger injectors
  • Sports cat and custom manifold
  • Custom Map
  • Replace bonnet with lightweight carbon fibre or plastic
  • Make it an event only car: Add a roll cage, strip the interior, add coilovers and move up to 'Road-going Modified' class, buying something else as a daily driver

Weight savings make little actual difference on hillclimbers unless they are really radical. A lighter seat won't make you go faster. One that clamps you firmly in place definitely will. The best bang for your buck. Next best is the final drive ratio. Do those two

Hi Anon.

The final drive change is a big job, hence its on the low priority list. Plus I may think its dead money in some respect if I then go for a 6 speed conversion for a stronger box, thats about £2100 if done by Pumaspeed, but then I wouldnt need to spend the outlay or time on modifying my 5 speed.

The seat is for holding me in, yes, the lighter weight is a bonus. Its not like my old S3 I had last year with leather electic seats that were very heavy, I could have saved about 30kg per seat just swapping those.

Then fit wheels with a smaller diameter.

leave churchill at the side line next time should save a bit of weight too 😅 oh yes
