Ford Transit mk7 2.4 Cutting out Randomly

Featured Replies

Hi All ,

I have a Ford Transit mk7 2.4 RWD and have a issue and need help !

The van starts and runs fine but Randomly cuts out whilst driving .
It cuts out when idle sometimes and also cuts out when driving at speed with throttle on

When it cuts out it's like someone has pulled the battery cable off , it's instant with no warning or power loss.

All lights on dash appear on just 1 second before it cuts out

The van starts up again immedietly after it cuts out though whilst coasting or at a stop

I've had it checked out by 3 mechanics and they all saying differnt things .

They all said however the EGR and injectors on the computer look fine and working as it should .
The maf sensor reading is slightly out but within ok spec ( I changed the maf sensor as it's cheap anyway but same issue)

I have attached pictures of the fault codes which were logged on the obd reader

I have been told to change the ECM PCM relay and if it's not that I would need to change the PCM unit itself .

Below are the list of fault codes when compter plugged in

U0140:87-A8-iPC
Lost Communication With Body Control Module

P1796:00-6C-IPC
Kick Down Switch Circuit Malfunction

P037D:29-28-PCM
Glow Plug Sense Circuit

P0404
EGR Exhaust Gas Recirculation Circuit Range/Performance

P068A:00-28-PCM
ECM/PCM Power Relay De-Energized Performance - Too Early

P1103:00-68-PCM
MAF in range but higher than expected

P1409:77-28-PCM
EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid Circuit Malfunction

U0155 PCM
instrumentation control module – no communication

Does anyone have any ideas or can help ??
Thanks

I don’t know much about transits at all. I see there are codes for lost communication. I have experience with focus mk2 / mk2.5 , that has canbus communication between ecu , bcm and the instrument cluster(Speedo console) . The canbus is a constant flow of computer data on two thin wires between the units.  A common problem is the soldering of the connector pins on the circuit board in the instrument cluster. The soldering cracks and the communication between the computer chips in the units falters. And that causes many problems. I don’t know if transits suffer something similar.   Even if not circuit board it could be corroded connectors somewhere between the units. This is a bit of a guess based on you have two codes for communication problems which I am sure means canbus data flow

Thanks for the reply, really appreciate it .

I have changed the relay in the fuse box ( it was an aftermarket one to begin with so looks like it has been changed before ) anyway it has not happened again yet but if it does I will get an auto electrician to trace the wires you mention .

Hello @eskimodoodle I think that @isetta has covered most issues. The main fault that stands out is

and also

These would indicate a fault on the canbus system. On cars like the Focus and Mondeo the first port of call to fault find is the BCM which is part of the fusebox. They are know to get water/dampness in them and the very small connector pins in the plugs and sockets of the BCM start to corrode (signs of greenish fur). The next most common problem is dry solder joints on the back of the instrument cluster. This problem occures on vehicles of your age. The lead free solder that was used to make the IC starts to fail and leads to dry joints with high resistance. There are companies on eBay that advertise a repair service on the IC for about £70

I have the same issue, but mines an old transit 125 T350 2.2.

only read out was cylinder head temperature sensor, which I had changed, but same this kept happening no other codes shown, but I noticed engine fan roaring away each time it happened.

my next step is to change thermostat today

You're a bit late to the party, but, check engine connectors for weak/broken wires too
