MK 4 Focus Limp Mode

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

Thanks for accepting me lol, I have a 68 plate Ford Focus Vignale Estate 2.0 ecoblue 150bhp with the auto box, only owned the car since yesterday, 460 mile drive home and car was as brilliant, most of the journey was done on cruise control.

Today I was out in the car and under acceleration on 3 occasions the car went into limp mode with a yellow spanner and the text saying check manual or something similar, after car is switched off and back on it was driving fine again until a little more pressure on the accelerator.

The car is under warranty until February 2022 so will get it booked in to be checked and hopefully repaired under warranty.

Just wondering if anyone has had anything similar happening and what was the outcome.

Thanks

Kev

I'm sure that every person that has had their car go into limp mode will tell you their solution was different to the next man.

You need the fault code for us to have any chance of helping you.

Iirc doesn't the 2.0 ecoblue require adblue?

Seems odd to have driven 460 miles and the next day to be having issues.

Yes it has a 10 litre adblue tank, the filler is next to the diesel filler. If the car needs adblue it will give a warning on the instrument cluser, followed by a count down each time you start the car warning how few miles you have left. If it runs out out of adblue during a journey it will allow you to continue until you switch off, at which point you can't restart until the adblue tank is refilled.

Hi Kev, how have you got on with this?

Hi l recently (may) bought a 2017 focus titanium and on a run up  to Glencoe earlier this month same problem happened with mine a warning sound came on along with the dash warning light spanner in orange along with the warning engine check now the car also went into limp mode , l pulled over checked under the bonnet and found the oil filler cap had come loose allowing oil vapour to make a mess around the filler cap.

I replaced the cap switched on it reset itself got full power back and carried on with my journey it happened 2 or 3 times in total before l got back home l then put it in the garage l bought it from Arnold Clark in May along with a two year warranty l am told that an o2 sensor was the culprit so the car has to go back to have a new one fitted next Tuesday hopefully that will cure it.

There is a recall for this problem, something to do with the injectors or something.

Hi Kev,

I have this same issue on a 2019 ford focus too, did you find a solution?

Low oil can cause limp mode- sorry very obvious I know but easy to miss as quite a few of the engine derivatives don’t have a specific low oil warning light. Also have heard a few stories of the ecoboosts being very fussy regarding oil and filters. Worth checking if you’re getting an indie garage doing your servicing whether they're using the correct Castrol magnatec Ford recommended oil and genuine ford oil filters.
