Fiesta 1.5 tdci popping out of 4th and 5th.

Featured Replies

Over the past few weeks my cars been popping out of 4th and 5th whilst driving. Its whilst accelerating. No bad noises or anything it'll just rev like it's not in gear catch and slip again. If I take my foot off the accelerator it'll go back in and pop out again a few times then sort it's self out..  I thought it was the maybe the clutch thats going but my dad thinks maybe a selector fork 🤷‍♂️ anyway he's got me thinking it's not the clutch but I've got it booked in for a replacement. Has anyone else had this issue or know what it could be at all? Thanks

If you or any of the previous drivers were in the habit of cruising with their hand resting on the Gear Lever then your dad is probably right.

If that is the case then that will be why it is happening in the top gears rather than the lower ones, which are changed in and out of more often.

Generally speaking, selector forks will not  behave like this. The dominant characteristic would be difficulty selecting gears. Gears that come back in on the overrun usually do so because a bearing is failing in the gearbox.

It's not a habit I have but the car was a learner car previously. So that's why I thought it was the clutch slipping. So this seems to be something gearbox related rather than clutch?

Can you get it to slip more easily if you are going uphill?

Just read your post again and if it is staying in gear and the revs are rising rather than popping out of gear then it is likely to be the Clutch. If it is jumping out of gear into neutral then it is likely to be gearbox related.

I got a bit confused by the title.

Exactly. If the car is worse on a climb, then the clutch is the problem.

Yes it's worse uphill. Happens when joining the a14 which isn't ideal either

Yeah the rpm rises and its definitely in gear so must be the clutch then. Thanks so much for the info I really appreciate the help
