Transit Connect 1.6TDCI suspected cylinder head crack

Featured Replies

Morning, looking for some help.

I have just purchased a Connect 1.6TDCi 115ps 2015my, 89834 miles. after 2 days the temp warning light came on red and the coolant fan was running on after engine stop. Also temp gauge stopped working.

Checked the reservoir and it seemed very dark and empty, removed the cap and a lot of pressure released and it filled back up.

Tried it yesterday on the way to garage for Mechanic to take a look and it was producing a little heat from the blowers but certainly not what you’d expect.

so the mechanic said it was a crack in the head, obviously a shock after just picking it up a few days prior.

spoke to a guy I know who is a Ford tech and he said there weren’t many cases on the diesel. He thought it was more likely to be the water pump impeller.

the mechanic I took it to had a tinker on last night and he bled and filled the system, he said there was what seemed like foam in the pipe and that the reservoir was sooty inside!

any thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

the van is in mint condition and I love it, should I be sending it back to the dealer I bought it from?

it has warranty but I’m concerned it will turn into a can of worms.

thanks

Just take it back and get them to sort it.

I doubt very much the head is cracked, head gasket gone possibly

If it's under warranty, or their fault, make them come and get it. I would

Hi Martin it  is sounding like you have a problem which could develop into a major problem,It is all following a route of a head gasket gone and the water has gone into bores and out of exhaust or the head gasket has blown across the water jacket causing the water to pressurise and water has been lost through the pressure cap all your symptoms are in common with a head gasket fault and all the symptoms you describe are what you would expect to see with this problem.Depending where the head gasket has blown will result in various water related problems ,suggest you also look and check the oil level in the engine to ensure the lost water has not entered the sump all are potential head gasket issues.A cracked cyl head would be something you would look for when replacing gasket. The whole job could be expensive so suggest you contact the seller prior to commencement of work.

Did you buy it privately, or from a dealer?

If you bought from a dealer, take it back, it is their responsibility to fix it (or refund you).

If you bought privately, then you probably will not have much recourse to the seller.

I think your garage is a bit premature saying there is a crack in the bore after only doing a pressure test. It is far more likely to be a head gasket than a cracked bore. (I'm assuming this is the 1560 cc Peugeot engine?)

It's a transit connect that we bought , and I believe my mate but yes it is premature I know I think he was talking worst case but its not a Peugeot engine in them is it? I haven't looked at it or even seen much of it to be fair ?

It's not a Peugeot engine.  Was a joint venture between PSA and Ford.  PSA used to make decent diesel engines before they let Ford near them!

I have heard of a few of these 8v DV6's cracking bores/blocks.  There are loads of them about though, and they are generally reliable (aside from the injectors!) so I would just drop a used engine in it personally.
