Noisy inlet/exhaust

Featured Replies

Soundsfrom inside the car like the exhaust is blowing, dealer says its all OK, they've checked for leaks on the inlet and exhaust (not sure how, having looked under the car this morning, everything is covered-up with undertrays and there's not evidence of them having been removed).

So I got my wife to press the throttle while I listened from outside, and maybe its not the exhaust but somewhere near the turbo/air filter box. So first thing of course I checked and yes, there is an air filter in it! (and I checked all the hose clips etc)

Now I have seen on MX5's that some owners make holes in the air filter box to make it sound more "sporty" so I'm thinking - is there something on there that Ford have done for just that purpose? This would fit in with the "ST-Line" trim to make it look like an ST, so maybe they've done something to make it sound like one inside?

The I came across reference to something called a "Sound Symposer".

How can I tell if I've got one? and what can I do about it?

PS I'm new to the car, only had it for about a month. So maybe, or maybe not, it just sounds different. But the noise is annoying so any ideas would be welcome for a fix, if feasible, that I can do that won't blow my warranty. Even taping over an unwanted hole somewhere!

Cheers - Richard

Well, here we are, 2 years, 20k miles, 3 dealer visits and an MOT later and the thing isn't any quieter, despite calmp being replaced and some sort of bolt-and-foam-tape mod from a technical service bulletin! Spose I ought to be used to it by now

There's probably a resonator on the intake.

On the older 1.5 TDCI it's the metal pipe above the turbo with two 'fat' rings.

Prior to that it was plastic on the 16v 1.6 TDCI.

Can the ***** be easily removed? (Warranty is now up so not worried about that)

No, it's the main intake pipe between the turbo and intercooler hose.

I think it must have a practical function as well as sound enhancement.  (No-ones buying a diesel for the engine sound!!)  Semi educated guess would be that it probably smooths out the airflow to reduce any surges in boost.

Having looked it up it does seem to be a tad essential. Ho hum.
