Avergae fuel consumption

Featured Replies

Does anyone know what information my 2008 1.4TDCi Fusion uses to calculate average fuel consumption?

I don’t know the answer. On my 2015 fiesta I noted the fuel put in and the mileage for 30k miles. The car consistently showed on the dashboard a figure about 5% higher than the real figure. I believe it does somehow calculate the fuel going into the engine from the computer as opposed to just relying on vagueness of what the fuel gauge shows.   Part of the reason I say that is because fuel gauge is affected by gradient so if you parked on a hill the fuel gauge may show higher than the start of the journey (more left) which would then be an impossible calculation as it would look like it gained fuel as opposed to used fuel.

Injection duration and rail pressure should give a fairly accurate figure for fuel usage.

They do seem to over read on any car though, as Isetta suggests.  I guess they're designed to 'round up' to look better for people that don't calculate using the brim method as well.
