Ford Focus Mk2 Sidelights on when unlocking car

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, you sure have a few little problems, but I'm sure we can get this sorted.

It is not helping that a number of diagrams that you are finding on line have a very simple and basic error. So just to get if established Terminal 85 must always be connected to the ground (negative). On some relays the coil does not have any polarity and so connecting terminals 85 and 86 either way round would make no difference, HOWEVER, some relays have a built in diode fitted across the relay coil to stop what is called "back EMF" when the relay coil is switched off. With these types of relay it is very important to ensure that terminal 85 is negative and terminal 86 is positive. So with that little issue cleared up, lets crack on and see if we can sort your lights out.

Terminal 30 (Common contact) of your relay is what is going to supply your sidelights. As I said way back at the beginning I would recommend connecting in to the wire that feeds the existing sidelight/headlight switch. I know this may be difficult to get at but it will make things a lot better in the long run.

Terminal 87 (Normally Open contact) should be connected to the sidelight circuit.

So just to clarify the above. You are fitting a normally open relay contact effectively across the back of the existing sidelight/headlight switch. When ever the relay contact closes it will just be the same as if the switch has been turned on.

Ok, so now we get to the relay coil connections.

How about we make life easy for ourselves ??? 😉

Run two wires from the relay terminal 85(neg) and terminal 86(pos) and take these to one of the footwell lights. Use a multimeter to establish when the light is on, which side of the light is positive and which side is negative.

Now all you have to do is connect your two wires from the relay coil, one to each side of the footwell light.

When the footwell light turns on the relay should 'click' on, and when the footwell lights go off the relay should 'click' off.  ----- If that is not happening then "Huston we have a problem"

Making a major assumption at this point the relay is clicking on and off then................ it would follow that the sidelights should be turning on and off when the relay operates.

Good luck guys, try and stick to the game plan above and let me know what happens. 👍

Unofix, if you charged a proper hourly rate for your advice, you could spend Christmas in Las Vegas LOL 🤣

That's exactly what I was going to suggest as it then doesn't matter whether the footwell lights are live-switched or ground-switched.
