Featured Replies

Hi

Thanks for having me

My problem clunk noise from steering when driving very slow or in reverse

Am Told  it is wear on upper knuckle joint of steering shaft

Have good idea how to change it

but can not find the torque settings for the 12 mm nut or the 12 torx nut involved

would be very thankfull if somebody can let me know same in N/M

Thanks Martin

Often a regrease will fix this.

Thanks Marky would you recommend removing it to do regrease  job

Hi There,

Did this a couple weeks ago After my complicated work on the steering column try "Ian Lanc" method first

see link. but use Lithium spray grease with thin straw nozzle attached. But you will have to spray upwards into gap

where upper bigger tube fits over smaller lower tube. Squirt into this joint gap as much as you then clean off

excess and take for a drive, Will take some time for grease to lubricate dry parts leave for a while do driving to

and from normal journeys. If still clunking repeat method above or next method take off only top bolt from steering

column and push down which will compress steering column ( Lock steering wheel in place before removing connection ).

And then you have more room to grease joint gap you can also compress and expand column more easily

Hi Henryge

Good info there thanks for taking the time to reply. If I am reading you right the problem would seem to be in the tubes and not

the knuckle joints as I thought,do you agree

Thank again

Wexyman

Hi There,

Thats right, Above the steering column is electric motor for steering at high speed, This gets quite warm which in turn travels to under greased tube splines and dries up (After a long time Date of manufacture to Date of clunking noise). The knuckle joints are sealed in so if you decide to remove top or bottom connection, If you can move knuckle joint around freely then that ok All issues with clunking noise are steering column tube splines under greased.

   Hope that helps Henry

Henry

great thanks will remove bottom bolt clean and re grease shaft

Will post how it works out

Do you happen to know torque setting for bolt

You are very helpful

Martin

Hi There, No don't know torque settings for both bolts. But used locitie and a resonable tighten up

Used 3/8 sq socket drives size as to not over tighten bolts if you only have 1/2 sq drive set don't tighten

using end of the rachet, Tried searching but got lost in the net (Haynes manual from the library mybe)

Did you fix that?
I took that stall off (easy to do)

Took the stalk apart (easy to do but watch you don’t lost the little pins with springs attached)

Spray the hell out of everything with electrical cleaner and it will fix your issues
