Intermittent start troubleshoot

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm wondering if you could help me to identify things to troubleshoot with my Fiesta.

Over the past couple of weeks my car have been experiencing trouble starting.  Usually when the fault happens, I would insert the key and try to turn the engine over and get nothing, I can't hear any noise and no attempt at starting.  I could try this a few times and nothing will happen.  I would leave it a minute and then try again and it would turn over just fine.  Sometimes , I could try to start it and it would take only 2-3 times but then start just fine other times  But usually, it would start without a problem on the first attempt.

Just today however, it has become more of an issue, It has been driven three times today and each time it has taken between 5-10mins to start.  I tried to start it early this evening and it wouldn't start at all, even after trying to jump it.

I would be grateful for any advice you could offer on this.

Thanks

J.

Check the battery negative lead. Get a hold of the leads and give them a pull, do they move about on the battery posts ?

Thanks Unofix, the car in on the drive a the in-law's house, I'll check it when I go there later.  Am I just looking for a loose connection to the negative terminal?

Check both battery leads, but the normal issue is with the negative battery lead making a poor connection. It's worth removing the negative lead from the body earth point and cleaning the area to remove any rust. Cover with a small amount of Vaseline to stop further corrosion, and kept out the damp.
