Battery reset

Featured Replies

Hello, people. Merry Christmas to you all. Could someone tell me how to do a battery reset? The reason I ask this is because my stop/start is not working. I do understand that at this time of year there is a heavy load on the battery. My battery is only about 18 months old. Even after driving over 100 miles the stop/start does not come out to play.

You can reset the BMS till the cows come home it will not fix the Stop/Start system.

The State of Charge of your battery is below 80% and hence the system has been disabled. You could drive a 1000 miles none stop and it would not in any way guarantee the level of charge in your battery.

If you would like to see the S/S system work again for a week or so then you are going to have to charge the battery (following the correct procedure). Also you will need to order some warmer weather and some more sunshine as the lack of both of these also turns off the system (and no, I'm not joking).

There is a key list of about 20 items that have to be achieved before S/S will operate, there is also a secondary list of things which can also suspend the operation.

Maybe bit off-topic - but why battery is not fully charged (aka near 100%)? Seems to be common practice/issue in now-a-days Fords (maybe also in other brands).

Start/Stop is just for lowering emission numbers in brochures - IMO.
Had earlier two company cars (Passat & Mondeo) having S/S - and the first thing after starting was press the button to disable S/S. 😆
It's so annoying system while driving in traffic jams or streets having traffic lights every 100 yards - IMHO. 🤪

I don’t find it annoying at all. Ok it stops in traffic or lights but as soon as you do through the motions of setting off again, clutch, gears etc the engine is running.

The best way to fix the problem is to increase the battery target State Of Charge (SOC) from 80% to something higher like 90 or 95%. This allows the system to charge the battery more fully and all the systems then work properly. You will also probably find that your heated screen will not work in the winter as the system decides that the SOC is not high enough. You either make the change yourself with Forscan and an appropriate lead or find someone near to you to do it for you. I would help but Somerset is a little far from Northamptonshire!

I'd be and am terrified that starting to set off yeilds nothing and your sat there in traffic looking and feeling like a lemom. Will never buy a stop start, same with these electric cars if they dont make a sound how do you know it will move when required ??????????

How do you know your clutch cylinder won't fail when you press the clutch to set off?  How do you know the gear-linkage won't pop off when you try to select first?  How do you know one of the brakes didn't seize on solid when you just applied them?

All true, as mine are automatics i can feel them pulling againt a light brake pedal.

Yes there plenty of things that could suddenly break . Having had broken clutch cables. And a gear linkage popping off and a gear lever coming off in my hand (common on 1970s capris and cortinas where the gear lever was held in on a Plastic threaded part and the plastic thread sort of wears away)  And a Dolomite where the gear lever just broke in half (it had overdrive and snapped where the overdrive wire went in).

Because all modern Fords will only charge the battery to 80% to save the planet from all the nasty emissions caused by the engine having to work a fraction harder to run the alternator to fully charge the battery. So instead the battery level State Of Charge (SOC) is set in the cars Smart charging control to only part charge the battery.

Far from reducing emissions  it just means that people have to buy a battery charger, then use mains electricity and keep topping up the battery, or what often happens is a perfectly good battery gets thrown on the scrap heap and replaced with a new one in the mistaken belief that this will fix the problem.

For those who are interested the SOC can be adjusted using FORScan, and changing it from the normal 80% default to either 90 or 95% will in almost all cases fix the concern.

Thanks for all your answers. All helpful too. I think that the battery is only about 18 months old. I do have the forscan as I got it to enable the sat nav in the Kuga. Is it easy to do?

In case anyone is wondering, they creep like a traditional auto.

If they are silent when moving how is a blind person to know that one is coming?

If I remember correctly the American and British rule makers require a generated external noise for just this purpose.

If motors are made in the USA they'll have an automatic whine LOL

Is this option also available on the Mk3? I'm not seeing the battery option within Forscan when clicking on BCMii module configuration.

Hi Nathan, I've never looked for the SOC on a Focus Mk3, so I really don't know the answer. I would expect that it must be adjustable on the Mk3 but maybe it has been called something else or it is controlled by a different module.

@JW1982 - Wilco might be able to advise of the Mk3 settings for the SOC
