Starting issues

Featured Replies

Good evening all,

Last few weeks I’ve been having some issues starting my 12 plate Zetec S. 90% of the time I turn my key in the ignition all the electrics die and I have to jumpstart the car which is a pain. What kind of issue am I facing here? Is it more likely to be a battery problem, an alternator problem or something else? Car had a new battery fitted in September 2019. Car is on 75000 miles so unsure if its down to something that needs expiring at this point in its life anyway. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks, Adam.

Have you checked the battery voltage when it doesn't start?  You can then check the voltage when it's running.

Are you driving the car long enough for the battery to recharge fully?

test the battery before you start the car is should be in the 12V range somewhere, then when you get it started test the voltage again it should then be in the 14v range. if your getting less then 12v when off and/or less than 14v when running that would point you in the right direction. however if your getting 14v when running but less than 12v when not then don't instantly assume battery. take it for a GOOD drive and when you get back and turn off the engine retest the battery. note down what voltage it is at leave it an hour or 2 then test again. if it is low but stays roughly the same then chances are the battery cant hold a charge. if its low but dropped by more than about 1v over an hour or 2 then chances are you have a earth leak somewhere or some other wiring issue that is draining the battery while the engine is not running.
