Powershift whats yours like on fuel?

Featured Replies

I am currently getting 25mpg on average from my normal driving around town and on 40 and 60 roads i get around 29MPG then on motorway around 34mpg and this just seems really low? its starting to feel like i am throwing money away and even notice the fuel gauge move and seem to be filling up too often for it to be normal. Already checked for fuel leaks and there isn't any so what else could be causing this or is the powershift focus just generally crap on fuel? at this rate i'll be getting rid of it for something else but i thought the powershift was meant to be better on fuel than other gearboxes?

You will need to give more info, what engine, petrol or diesel?

I had a MK3.5 1.5tdci and it returned about 45-55mpg on a mixture of roads. The PS box is meant to be better on fuel than your standard torque converter box. It does need servicing regularly though, if that's not been done then that will make a difference. The short journeys are not good for fuel consumption either so you might need to give it an 'italian tuneup' to blow the cobwebs

Sorry forgot to say, 1.6 petrol powershift and the gearbox was serviced only 1500 miles before sale but maybe its a combination of short trips and cold weather giving poor MPG? what PSI do you have in your tyres? garage i bought the car from put 32 in all 4 tyres so maybe that has something to do with it?

A 2012 petrol would have the 6SCT250 DPS6 dual-clutch gearbox as far as I remember. It's a 'dry clutch' so shouldn't need a great deal of servicing. The 6DCT450 MPS6 used in diesel engines and higher powered petrol engines (>2000cc) used a wet clutch that needed regular servicing. The DPS6 was not without its problems, big problems, but fuel efficiency was never one of them, so it may not be the cause of your poor figures.

I'm unsure what the book figures are for the 1.6 petrol in terms of mpg, however a quick Google suggests Ford states 44.8 mpg and owners report an average of 36.5 mpg in the 'real world'. So your experience falls below the average.

As you say, the cold weather is certainly a factor. My own fuel consumption has taken a 10% hit, as do most people so come summertime you could expect low 30s around town and possibly 40ish on longer motorway journeys.

I think my tyres were at 35psi all round on 17" rims, I was normally the only person in the car.

done this before so here's a brief summary

even when you were still inside the cooker you became uniquely aware of a quick thrill from acceleration, its why you shut up, and brats shut up when you're picked up when crying

this never leaves us, and in the old days of gutless cars and manual boxes we accepted a quick stab of the throttle does pretty much nothing - and to get uphill you have to change gear rev it up and try...

then they invented turbos - now even small engines make serious grunt - the 1.0 litre 3cyl shopping engine, can make far more go than a 1970's Capri 3.1RS - and thus people got lazy and re found the buzz of standing on the throttle for some pointless acceleration (usually in a queue of traffic) but doing this drinks fuel

keep the engine revs between 1500 and 2300rpm, never press the throttle more than 10mm down and use the cruise control as often as is physically possible - you'll get there just as fast as you ever did but save 25% of the fuel

if you use the time to think from a calmer less aggressive and dangerous driving style, you can focus on driving smoothly and reading other's behaviour, you'll get there 10% faster than everyone else, and save 40% of your fuel (and probably have less points)

The average is 25mpg but currently getting 24mpg and at most i have had is 27mpg and thats from barely even tapping the throttle...driving "aggressively" i get around 22mpg if im lucky, i know the car is automatic and a 1.6 but not even 30mpg around town when driving normally and always making sure the car is always in the highest possible gear seems crap, considering we also own a Nissan x trail twice as big and heavy and also a 1.6 and that gets around 45mpg just cruising around town even with heavy throttle at times and on motorways it gets something like 55mpg.

I think i will try checking and pumping up the tyres as with Fords recommendations my front tyres always seem a little flat so i'll put 34 in front and 32 in back and see how that goes plus its always been serviced and even had a gearbox service before we bought it and i don't think cold weather alone can justify such a massive dip in fuel economy but if it doesn't increase within a few months i'll probably just sell it.

The old 1.6 TI-VCT combined with the Powershift gearbox is not particularly known to have good fuel economy. To be honest an average fuel consumption of 25 MPG during winter is quite normal for this type of engine.

May of found a contributing factor, decided while getting fuel (got 200 miles from just over half a tank) that i would use morrisons tyre pump and it turns out both front tyres didn't even have 30 psi in and back tyres had 25 and 26 so just did them all to 32 and steering is lighter and goes over speedbumps better too, last time i use one of those portable air compressors unless i have to just to get me to a garage because according to that my front two had 32 and rear 30.

Seems maybe the combination of cold weather and low tyre pressures are causing the MPG issues, car is automatic and 1.6 so i am not expecting excellent MPG but i would expect a car to get at least 30mpg thats all but i'll see what its like when it warms up.

I forgot - E10 evil fuel

In September they pushed normal unleaded from E5 (5% ethanol) to E10 (10% ethanol)

ethanol is less energy dense - so if you add this dangerous rubbish to petrol and try to drive at the same pace you need more fuel than it used to use

the boffins claim it could be 6% decline - but that's rubbish - I'm seeing 20% drop - I've swapped back to real fuel - currently to 50 50, E10 filth and Esso 99 Super unleaded (note this is actually E0 in most parts of the country) -  my MPG has regained 10% of the loss - but now I'm poor

either way u r poor - we have been stitched up with another Boris slave tax - all in my other post earlier is still valid, but what you had this time last year has gone forever or you pay 15p a litre more to cure it

Just done a 50 mile trip with most roads being dual carriageways and going through a few towns and my car is still only averaging 27 mpg....around town under 30mpg is pretty bad but on 4 dual carriageways and 40 & 50 roads too with hardly any traffic? as my trip was pretty munch going straight on for 25 mile each way, decided to have it checked over and the car has no leaks or issues and is serviced so at this point im just going to assume the 1.6 petrol Focus is terrible on fuel.

Thinking of getting rid at the end of the month for a 1.5 diesel Focus instead as i cant keep running a car that cant even produce 30mpg even if its automatic and cold but yeah thanks for the advice guys! time to get rid it seems.

I had the 1.5 diesel with auto box, on a run like you have suggested I would get mid to high 50's. Dropping to high 40s around town, so it would be a good switch for you. Just remember that the auto box needs serviced every 3 years

Yeah i was gonna get the 1.0 but decided on the 1.5 diesel with autobox as i cant lie once you drive an automatic its hard to go back to manual or maybe its just me lol. You'd get 40s around town? wow thats a massive step up as yesterday i averaged 27 and now im back doing town driving its down to 24.6 mpg and this is me not even touching the gas pedal, no idea why anyone would get the 1.6 petrol Focus especially when it cant even do 30mpg but i'm defo getting a diesel next and will probably try and service the gearbox myself if possible as i don't trust Evans Halshaw to of even serviced my current.
