Mk8 2018 1l ecoboost h/brake

Featured Replies

Hi just had to brake at lights on a steep hill, and the handbrake slipped a bit. It does come up very high. I doubt anyone has checked the drums, pads or handbrake cable since new, should I get it checked?. Does the cable stretch on these?

Are you sure the handbrake was fully on? On the Mk 8 you need to press the footbrake very firmly before applying the handbrake. Also you can be fooled by the hill start assist which holds the car for a few seconds and the car can roll back after that if the handbrake is not fully applied.

Not sure exactly which version you have, mine has rear discs and handbrake travel is quite long - I did get it adjusted at service.

By now your car should have had at least one service and an MOT and possibly two annual "convenience" checks if they have been done, so I would expect a fault should have been noticed, but by all means report it at your next service visit if still unhappy.

As well as Rogers excellent advice when you apply the Handbrake on any car it should be done without your thumb on the Release Button not with as most driving instructors wrongly tell their pupils.

In my experience rear drums normally give an effective handbrake if all is in order.

If you are happy that the brake is correctly applied and still not holding properly, then after nearly 4 years (don't know if you mentioned mileage in any of your posts) some attention may be required to check cable/adjustment, clear drums of brake dust, check auto adjusters are working correctly, check brake shoes and drums for wear/scoring and replace if necessary, etc. With a 2018 67 plate you must be very near service/mot time anyway?

It had a service before I had it, no mention of brakes, just plugs oil, filter, pollen filter.

No, it's not part of a standard service and would be an extra item.

If you're not happy, you need to raise it when you take the car for service. If the handbrake efficiency is not up to standard, it would fail MOT anyway.
