Battery and Stop-Start Technology

Featured Replies

I guess this is in the right place, since this sort of info is neither vehicle-specific nor Ford-specific! I suspect a moderator may soon let me know if not ...

Due to issues I've encountered, and to which I've contributed to/gained info from other threads, I've been doing some associated research to try and understand the background to what is going on.

My vehicle is fitted with a Varta EFB battery, and there is the question of the parameter-drived Stae-Of-Charge, so that was my starting point.

Here are links to some of the articles Varta's web site which, among others, are very enlightening and might help understand the whole business of State of Charge thresholds etc. in simple terms. It's certainly helped me!

Erroneous link supplied

Double checked the battery size according to the Varta link you posted and it's the right one...didn't expect any different to be honest.

It still makes we wonder though why the battery was showing a 52ah in forscan though.

Is there another way of finding out the SOC through Forscan  (I've not found it if there is).

According to Varta (or at least my interpretation) the newer batteries (AGM or EFB) need to be composed by SOC and SOH (State of Health), and in the graphic that composes the SOH there is a RA or Reserved Amperage.

This makes me wonder if the battery manufacturers taking an "IT approach" to batteries (In IT to preserve SSD Cycles by overproviding, meaning, we do not use all capacity of said SSD in order to prolongate / preserve it's life cycle).
That's why the batteries are configured / recognized by forscan having less CCA or Amperage in order to extend their service life....
Or at least is that makes be believe it is.....

What you think ?

I think I'll wait for Ford's response to my query asking why do I have to keep recharging my battery to keep the stop/start going, when the dealer can find no fault and the car is in daily use with very few short journeys and stop/start usually switched off!

Still waiting for Ford's response - they sent me an email asking for further info the day before my local dealer responded to a complaint to HO about levels of service! They hav now replaced the battery with an identical one, a 70ah Varta battery identical to the original. I ventured into the car's ecu earlier and came up with the attached battery settings. Odd that the battery type says 80ah, I wonder of the garage set it to this to try and fix the issue? ...CaptureForFordForum.thumb.JPG.63ec3c328e0a86ebcddf69a080f72caa.JPG

Lol. That's exactly what I've done by altering the size of the battery closer to what's in the car. You just need to alter the 80% limit to 90-95.

Well @Wino that saved me typing an answer 🤣 🤣

Hello everyone

new member,  first time posting (hope this makes sense)

I have a 2015 Focus st3 and I am having issues with the start stop, I have to regularly keep resetting it through the pushing of various buttons etc and it seems to work for a little while, then while sitting in traffic with the start stop active it does one of 2 things,

1- it will turn off the start stop and the little emblem goes from green to grey and the car restarts

2- the car stalls and flashes up on the instrument cluster fault detected manual start required .
then if have to reset the system via the buttons again

any help or advise would be great

Hello John I don't think the Stop/Start problem has been mentioned for nearly a couple of days now.

Just search the forum on the subject and it will explain all about State Of Charge (SOC), correct battery charging, The reset of the Battery Monitor Sensor, and how to put the whole lot right using FORScan.
