One garage I went to said that there were two different alternators for my car and they wouldn't know which one until the took the old alternator out! Another garage said that there was only one type of alternator and they had matched it to the registration number of the car! Which garage is correct?

    I don’t know the answer.  If they say there are two types I wonder what they are saying the difference is.  May be it is just power output and they can’t see the label until alternator removed (although maybe could see with a dentist mirror). Maybe it’s a different pulley , traditional pulley or one way clutch in pulley. It does seem odd that they say they can’t identify it until removed.
