Emptying 2010 TDCI fiesta fuel tank through the filter?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Failed the MOT, and the shop wanted 600 to repair. Just fitted new wishbones yesterday and exhaust is due for tomorrow (Needed higher rise jack to lift car so that I can actually get it up on the jackstands)

Anyway, it failed the emissions test, so I thought perhaps I should thrown in some cataclean and cross my fingers. Issue is that I've got a full tank. I'm unable to drive it and I've no idea how to get the fuel out when the antisiphon feature actually works. I do need to swap my fuel filter over too, but I was wondering if I hooked up a 12v diesel pump up to the outlet on the filter, would that pull out the fuel from the tank? Or is there an easier way that doesn't involve dropping the tank out?

Probably just needs a good hard thrashing to clear out the exhaust.  Should be done on the way to the test centre with any modern diesel.

Do you have the actual smoke value so we can can see how far off it was?

(To answer the original question, yes you could drain the fuel from the pipes in the bay with a 12v pump, but it'll take forever!)

No, they didn't give me any of the details, just the fail sheet. Its on 120k miles and hasn't had a cat clean since 90k. I don't travel as much as I used to, but I'd occasionally drive a good 2 hours or so on the M4+M5 and a shortish 10-15 min journey down the duals to work daily, id be surprised if it doesn't need a propper flush in all honesty.

It shouldn't need any additives at all really.  Honestly, just getting everything nice and hot and getting the exhaust pressure up with high revs should be enough to burn off anything and push it through the system.
