My bonnet wouldn't close...

Featured Replies

This is an intriguing problem. About a month ago, I had a flat battery in my Mk6 van (from connecting a dashcam to a permanent live feed) so after a jump-start I took the battery out to charge at home overnight.

After I took the battery out, the bonnet wouldn't slam closed. I couldn't work out why, so I left it down; it was midnight and it seemed safe enough.  When I replaced the charged battery in the morning, the bonnet slammed shut, just as it should.

Anyway. This week I had a broken spring on the front OS suspension, so I took the afternoon off to fix it. When I took the strut out from the wheelarch, the bonnet wouldn't close. When the spring was replaced and the strut refitted, the bonnet closed properly.

Question: is this a usual thing? I can't recall it happening to any other vehicle I've worked on.

And, given the supposed rigidity of the chassis, why would removing minor items like the battery affect the bonnet?
