2017- Fiesta door only opens from the inside

2017 (mk8) fiesta

The front passenger door is only opening using the interior latch. When trying to open the door using the exterior handle it feels as though the door is still locked, the handle doesn't travel very far.

This happened intermittently about a year ago, but a squirt of WD-40 behind the handle seemed to get it working again, unless this was a coincidence.

Has anyone got any ideas what might have failed and if it's a common problem?

Any thoughts or help is appreciated.
