Can you help out an old dog? (mk2 2010 focus)

Featured Replies

The issue is with being able to smell diesel whilst in the cabin, regardless of if the fans are set to off. The smell gets worse as the fan speed gets increased. Was advised by a mechanic that it needed a new injector leak off pipe. The issue only started occurring after it was serviced, immediately after. I have replaced the leak-off pipe and cleaned the engine best I can but the smell remains, there really isn't enough to explain the smell in the cab. Smell is very potent when standing outside the car, near the engine bay (bonnet closed). The car is very well maintained, mainly 2 hour motorway journeys (around 100 miles) 6 times a week.

Have I missed off cleaning a certain area? Are there any relevant hoses to check? Issue was caused after the mechanic, what could he have knocked? Any help is much appreciated.

When the engine is running can you hear any noises coming from the injectors ?

We've had this many times , the copper washers at the seat of the injectors fail.

Essentially exhaust gases are entering the cabin directly through the pollen filter .

You may have a build up what looks like black tar around the injectors.

Good luck.

Thanks for your msg. Can the washers at the seat of the injector be replaced?

Absolutely yes they are pennies .

The problem can be extracting  the injectors, and the clean up process that must be done as best as possible to ensure a good seal .

Great to hear. thanks! do you think that area could have been damaged during a service?

If it is the copper washer seals on the injectors then no a service wouldn't have made any difference.

This happens over a long time period .

It's worth checking intercooler hoses for splits also . Anything that can emit gases into the engine compartment.

thankyou for the help!

On my previous fiesta 1.6tdci I was lucky enough to fix the leak around base of injectors by going the retaining nuts up a bit tighter , all mine were not tight at all. Don’t overdo it. If you strip/ snap one it will be a major problem. The small was really bad it was like cooking the diesel and turning it into thick black tar

I'll give that a shot, are the retaining nuts easy enough to identify? The same is happening to me, diesel being turned into a thick black tar

Can you smell raw diesel fuel? Or burnt Diesel exhaust fumes?

It smells' more like burnt diesel fumes. A very heavy smell, if that makes sense?
