Ford Fiesta Advisories -

Featured Replies

I just purchased a new fiesta 2009 model. The MOT has some advisories. Can you please let me know what it is and should I be worried?

  • Light corrosion on rear outer sills
  • Road wheel slightly distorted Offside rear inner (5.2.2 (c) (i))
  • Drivers side door check strap area damaged

I can say you have absolutely nothing to worry about. It's all trivia and I would bet that if you took the car to different MOT station next week then none of those points would come up. On the negative side they would probably find some other trivia to list as advisories.

Indeed, could even be trivial 😀

Some garages put down advisories all the time and some don’t. It’s very inconsistent. The wheel won’t get worse. The door check strap area sounds odd, not sure what the damage could be or how it happened.  Maybe bent as someone let the door go in a strong wind. The corrosion one might be worth looking at. Often when cars fail mot on corrosion it could have been prevented or delayed for a year or two if action is taken early.  Impossible to say without seeing it but depending on what it’s like it might be worth cleaning up and painting with a few coats of hammerite.  If In two years time it failed on sill rust and someone says ‘you should have dealt with that early on and it might have lasted another couple of years’ then you would wish you had.   It might be trivial and probably is .

I can see the the door strap area damaged. The paint is stripped where the door strap screws are fitted in. There are cracks on paint around that area. It certainly doesn't look nice. Should I get it repaired? Not sure how much it would cost to repair it.

Strap area -

If the elements can get to bare metal (not 100% sure from that photo) then that will start to rust, so the MINUMUM I would do is clean it/wire brush/emery etc and paint the area with a rust inhibiting primer and then topcoat. Materials cost £12, perhaps. Having done that, a repair with an additional steel plate in that area would be better, if you're able to do that, though I doubt it's worth paying for a professional repair on your car. Just be careful when opening the door on a windy day unlike the previous owner, obviously 😉

Looks like the wind has caught it and blown the door wide open at some point.

It makes me laugh how people buy a car and then question if things wrong with it are serious or not 😂. You're supposed to do this before you buy it.

I'd be more concerned about the condition of the actual door itself from what we can see.

Has the car been on its side and dragged through a ditch, it looks either filthy or rotten 😮

Seems amazing they mentioned that door check strap area on the mot advisories.  If it had a cigarette burn on the back seat would he have mentioned that, or a scratch on the bumper?

Because the overall condition of the car was really good. And this was the only thing which didn't look that bad at that point.

Does it need repair or should i leave it? will it get more worse?

It's not worth spending £200 to get it professionally painted up. Buy some touch up paint, and some rust inhibitor. Clean the area up, treat with the rust inhibitor and then paint. Don't expect it to look like new, all you need to try and do is stop it from rusting.
