Mk 3 Estate Damp in Boot

Featured Replies

Hello, I've been searching through the posts on here detailing the various problems people are having with damp in the boot of their Mk 3 Estate's.

I see that some people have had problems with the panel sealing at the top of the boot opening just behind the end of the roof bar rails. Initially i thought that was the problem that i was having and i think it might still be a very small part of the problem. However with the aid of a watering can and targeted pouring there seems to be alot more water working its way in via a different route.

When water is poured down the sides of the boot opening it looks as though some of it is making its way into the boot and sitting in the channels via the rubber/plastic boot door bumpers seen in the picture below

From there it is coming through a hole towards the bottom of the pillar located here

And the water then goes either side into the hollow area at the bottom of the pillar or flows out and gathers in the channel in the boot area causing damp and mold to grow on the bottom of the boot floor, the lower boot side trim and the sound proofing behind it.

Ive tried it on both sides of the boot and water gets in that way. Should there be a seal around the boot bumpers to stop this and or should the holes on the inside also be sealed?

My car was hit from behind a couple of years ago and the bumper area had to be repaired. I'm wondering if this area has been affected by the repairs carried out.

Any thoughts and ideas of how to fix this would be much appreciated.
