Sync 3 map update

Featured Replies

I downloaded the latest sync 3 upgrade - no problems.  I’ve now had 2 attempts to download the latest maps.  After the first at attempt, which failed I wiped my USB and redownloaded the map files from ford, because I thought they may have been corrupted?  Today I had another go at installing.  It took over 2 hours and then I got 2 messages:  Message 1:  "Installation failed.  Error code:INSTL_ERR14.  Download files again and retry to install"

Message 2:  " Your SYNC software was successfully updated to 3.4.21194 PRODUCT.  For more information on what this update contains please refer to http// support.ford.com or the Ford Pass app"

I didn't get a download complete message.  There is no completion file on my USB so I'm guessing the maps haven't been downloaded.  (I do wonder what was happening during those 2 hours?).

I would be very grateful if someone could advise what I could do next.  I tried Emailing Ford but I'm not holding my breath while I'm waiting for a reply!  Hoping someone can help.  Many thanks,

Steve

Message 2 relates to a firmware update. You can’t officially do a firmware and map update at the same time.

Was the car connected to WiFi while on your driveway ( for example ) when you were attempting to update the maps via USB?

The Ford workflow is to get the firmware up to the most recent version and then update the maps. Usually the Ford site won’t release a map update until there is a confirmed latest firmware install.

Recheck on the Ford website by entering your VIN, it should either offer a firmware update or confirm you are at the latest version. Then allow you to download the map.

Ensure your USB stick is at least 32GB ( 64GB is better ) and formatted to Ex-FAT, download the update(s) and go for a drive.

Thanks for responding to this, I really appreciate your help Andy.

Just to clarify, I did the sync 3 update first, that seems to go well.  I uploaded the ford website with the completion file as requested and then, as you said, the maps were released for me to download.

I downloaded the maps, unpacked the zip file onto a 64GB USB which was formatted with ex Fat as required.  As I said I have now had 2 attempts at installing the new maps, I’ve not seen a download complete message and the competition file been generated (for the maps download).  The last messages displayed were the ones in my post.

To answer your question about Wi-Fi being connected.   I don’t know is the answer.  Should I try to connect to Wi-Fi or should I disable it if I’m downloading maps from a USB?

Some time ago, when I first got the car I did try to connect to my home Wi-Fi but the signal is weak on my drive and the connection is not reliable.  I have noticed that it does sometimes connect to BTWi-Fi although, to be honest even though I’m a BT customer,  I’m not sure what that means.

Anyway, after I posted my question, I made a note of the software version screen (“About Sync”)

It tells me:

SYNC3, Software Version :3.4.   Build 2194_PRODUCT.

It then give me SYNC MAC Addresses:  System Updates, Vehicle Hotspot & Bluetooth  addresses.

The On Board Modem Serial Number, Vehicle Identification number,

Gracenote Version: 1.1.1.2316 (EU-0020)

Navigation Maps Version: F10

SYNC Serial Number(ESN)

Unfortunately I didn’t note this information before I started, but I remember seeing somewhere (on the ford website perhaps?) that the Sync 3 was last updated in 2019, probably when the car was new ( I bought it in July 2021).

I wonder if the software has actually been updated  but for some reason the final competition has been missed?

Is that even possible?

I would be really interest to know what the original error message: Error Code: INSTL_ERR 14 actually means.

As I said the whole process seems extraordinarily long, having already tried it twice I’m not keen on repeating it without understanding more.

I tried contacting Ford, who just said got to a Dealer.  I’m hoping I can sort it without doing that, it takes time and will probably cost me a lot of money.  It shouldn’t be that difficult should it?

Thanks again, Steve

Does your nav and sync system function correctly? I ask that because the latest sync version is 3.4*** and maps are F10 so it's likely everything is fine.

I hate to say this but I don’t think you have anything to worry about it looks like your Sync3 system is reporting the latest firmware version which is Build 2194 and the latest maps which are F10

I suspect your car has been downloading little bits here and there as well as you updating by USB.

Long story short - it looks like you are where you need to be 🙂

As far as i can see everything seems to be fine? I just wasn't sure what the latest versions were supposed to be.  Ford don't seem to make there software update "release notes" accessible as far as I can see.

Many thanks to Andy & Chris.  I really appreciate you taking the trouble to respond.
