Ford 4-Year Service vs Independent?

Featured Replies

Hey folks,

Got a question and would like to hear your thoughts, whether it’s from experience or just an opinion really. The missus has a 2018 Fiesta St-Line 1.0L 100ps which is coming up to the four year mark, so its due its four year schedule service and is now out of extended warranty.

Our local dealer (Hendy) quoted £400, which covers the usual checks from the looks of the Ford Pass app, whereas the same dealer offered a different one at £300 for a “Gold” service including spark plugs, oil etc and a local independent offered similar less plugs for £220.

Would you say its worth spending the £400 to prevent any issues with the engine, specifically the belts? In the grand scheme of things, hundred quid isn’t much but was curious if im missing anything.

Cheers

At 4 years I'd want the plugs done before they seize into the head personally.

As mentioned on another thread yesterday, as long as you can guarantee the correct oil is used and no engine flush, then an independent garage should be able to manage an oil change the same as the main dealer.

If you go with the independent then make sure the invoice is tallied up with the job sheet as to what's been done and to include genuine Ford parts and approved oils etc.

I agree - check that you are comparing like with like - genuine Ford parts.

I'd also check out Ford's service plans if you're happy with your local dealer - they work well for some people.

But my decision recently has been made on the fact that I don't rate my local Ford dealer at all, but get good service from a local independent.

I had a 4th year service and MOT at a Ford dealer (including plugs) for £250

That seems like a very good price for a major service & MOT, I doubt many in other areas would be able to match it!  1.0EB plugs are about £30 alone, oil and oil/air/pollen filters about £70, MOT £55...leaves less than £100 for labour!

TCH DERBY do a service pack

1x convenience service and 1x full service inc brake fluid, wash n vac, free puncture repairs, free plugged in diagnostic, free fluids anytime etc etc , mot for £30 ..,

all for £235

That's a decent package.

Perry's at Chesterfield insist on an upfront £165 fee to even look at the car.

When we took it in for the update there was a few other things I asked them to look at, squeaky gear lever going from 4th to 3rd ( which has since reappeared but now from 2nd to 1st), tailgate strut creaking upon opening and closing. He put them on the job sheet and then asked for an upfront payment incase it wasnt warranty related. I declined and walked off and they had the cheek to ask as to why I don't use them for service

You can get all the Ford Service Schedules on the Ford ETIS website. Just enter your Vin number and fiddle around and you can get a printable version to take to your independent technician to use and stamp and attach to your invoice. Also get him to stamp the Service book.  Also buy your oil, filters, plugs etc from a Ford Dealer and attach the invoice for these.  If you have the paperwork it helps when you come to part exchange or sell the car. I get the first 3 years services done by Ford and then use my trusty Independent technician.

It's only necessary to have the service book stamped for warranty purposes but do still keep getting it stamped at each and every service as proof you have had it done as the independent invoices are irrelevant as the dealers can't pass those on to the next purchaser due to data protection laws.
