I have a US 2016 Focus with about 44,200 miles on the clock. I've begun my nightly "what could go wrong" panic attack.

But seriously, what should I be looking out for?

a new car ?

A lot depends on what engine it has.  Fuel?  Size?  I do not know if the USA engines are same type as in uk.  A common one in uk is 1000cc 3 cylinder turbo charged ecoboost engine and this seems to be troublesome.

Did you miss the word "seriously" in the OP's post? 😉

OK, "seriously he should be looking for a new car" 🤣

Tbf, if he wanted serious answers, he could at least have given us some specifics as Isetta has said!

On the one hand it could be a 1.0/1.6TDCi manual with the dodgy clutches...on the other it could be an Automatic with the dodgy Powershift box!

One thing we can be sure of though, judging by every Mk3.5 I walk past, the door seals will be hanging off at some point!

OK, sorry, I work odd hours and am not online much. My car is a US 2016 Ford Focus, 2.4L four-cylinder hatch (using regular US 87 octane gasoline) with about the mileage I stated above. It also is mated to the unfortunate automatic transmission we all know about.

However, it has been very reliable to me: Last year, during what has been jokingly called "SNOWVID" here in Texas, my car started right up when the temperature was at 6°F (-14C) and I made it home without issue.

Honestly, this has been the most well-built and reliable car I've owned. I've had cars go back because knobs would break off in my hands or fuel pumps would quit after six months of new ownership (a 2009 Pontiac G6). It was brand new!

I want to keep this car, but after six years do I need to worry about hoses? belts? Other rubber parts? I clearly don't drive very much, but I want to try to figure out what I should be planning for.

updated fuel info

if your worried about rubber bits just replace them a few at a time, same with most other bits, if as you say you love the car you'll spend to keep it.

I'm not worried about specific rubber bits as such, I'm just a Nervous Nelly.

Posting here just helps because it's a Ford forum.

These are the things I wonder about when I'm sitting in traffic in July when it's 101°F (38C) and it's going to be like that for three months (Texas).

This forum (even tho I'm still new) is a place a like to visit. That's all.

2.4 litre Mk3 Focus?  We definitely didn't get that in the UK.  Even the RS was 'only' 2.3!  Is it a non turbo?

These are the ones you want: https://www.carmax.com/cars/ford/focus/rs

Most on here are UK based so some info may not be applicable to your motor, tho i hope we can help where possible.

look out for where water drains off the car, maybe around the bottom of the windscreen (my MK4 had a drain missing on the drivers side so water drained off straight into the chassis tube, and over here we have salt on the roads in Winter so its salty water!)

Some tales on here about spillages from the windscreen washer bottle onto a key electrical component below it!

Also look on this forum for battery charging issues/State of Charge settings on the car (usually under  "my stop/start doesn't work")

look for where mud ends up from the front wheels (along sills) and rear wheels (maybe up onto chassis rails) - put mudflaps on the minimise it, and keep an eye for corrosion esp where the exhaust might damage underseal etc. And of course clean the stuff out of the wheelarches, and from the lip around the edge of the wheelarch.

I figured as much. I appreciate everyone here. One day, when I come back to Britain, maybe I can raise a pint with you lot.

Start stop and variable charging are methods to decrease emissions for European cars.

I have a feeling emissions aren't top of the list in your state considering the engine size and no turbo?

Given that I live in Texas, probably not.

My Focus was one of the last hatchbacks before Ford switched to selling crossovers. I hate it.

It's a 2.4L naturally-aspirated, four-cylynder engine.
