Ecoboost 1.0 - which oil, brake pads and tyres?

Featured Replies

Hi there again,

Apologies for the basic questions, its my father-in-law's car and he's stopped driving now so its down to me to sort it out as it were.

Its a 2014 1.0 Ecoboost s/s model and looking at the service history, it missed one last October and I also noted the front pads were an advisory last mot and tyres all round are getting down towards the wear bars.

So, which oil, pads and tyres would you recommend?

Cheers

Jim

Ford oil and filter. DO NOT FLUSH OR ADD ADDATIVES

Brembo pads from Europarts are good, seem to have less dust, if discs are worn change discs too.

Whichever tyres you fancy I suppose, I like Michelins because you can get 30,000 miles front on about 40,000 miles rear

Keep an eye on coolant level

Ford use Castrol do they not? so a Castrol 5w20 oil and it needs 4.6 l itres?

You say he’s stopped driving. Not clear if you are doing this to make car tip top to sell or for you to use long term.

If you are unsure, I would always use OPIE to select the correct oil for your car.  Put your numberplate into their lookup.

Ford don't make oil, so I would go for a decent name, Shell, Fuchs, Castrol etc etc

Pads - anything off ECP or Carparts4less, which are the same company, but slightly cheaper!

Tyres?  What size wheels do you have?  Yes it does depend, due to availability.

In terms of oil, I'd recommend you refer to the car's user manual as it has a recommended oil and the 1.0 ecoboosts are one of the few engines where there is very little lea way when it comes to oil as the wrong one will undoubtedly cause damage to the wet belt and oil system.

in terms of tyres, how long is a piece of string, good for a good brand such as Michelin, maxis, good year, etc and don't go for the budget tyre, get a good mid range one (the budget ones will wear faster and have lower grip) I'd recommend either a all seasons or summer tyre.

As others have said brembo are good, but you can't go wrong for ford oe pads.

...just to add to the advice about oil - yes modern cars are very picky when it comes to oil, and that's not just the viscosity, examples of which are the 5w20 or 5w30, but also the ACEA code - which is why a numberplate lookup is important and websites that do this for you are very useful.

OPIE or ECP/Carparts4less should all do this, and give similar results, but OPIE are oil specialists who welcome direct questions if you have any doubts.

So my Fiesta being an earlier 1.6 needs 5w30 and an ACEA code of A5/B5 - yours is probably different.

Oil filter I'd choose Mahle... or Bosch if there was no Mahle available.

Good luck!

Always go by the manufacturers specs & recommendations.Brand of oil does not matter,as long as it meets OR exceeds the specs.Pads?Plenty of reputable brands available on the market. You do NOT have to use a ‘genuine’ Ford brand.

By "FORD" I mean go to Ford and get the oil

Oh.  I would thought that was the most expensive way of getting the same oil. My mistake.

ECP/CP4less and many specialists who use evil ebay, including OPIE and Pipercross all sell the oil cheap and delivery is included.

So my 5 litres of Shell Helix Ultra Pro AF 5w30 A5/B5 was 25.62 GBP delivered from CP4less, but if you get a better deal from your Ford dealer, then rock and roll :)

It's all about getting the right oil with the right additives to protect the wet belt on the 1.0, not so much having an oil with the correct grade. Even if it's double the price it's worth it to protect the belt

Genuine oil on ebay isn't all that expensive either.  I stopped using the local dept some years ago and just buy genuine stuff on ebay nowadays.

yes.... I stressed that point five posts up yesterday - ACEA code, and using a decent website numberplate lookup, like OPIE, and ring them up to be certain.

I never ever go anywhere near a car dealer for obvious reasons :-)

That being said the ford parts plus service I have found is actually cheaper for certain parts than even the same part but used, so mileage may vary on that one

Sure,& pay exorbitant costs!Dealers are not known as ‘stealers’ for nothing.Just go to an auto parts store & save yourself some money.

I am using ‘Penrite’(very well known Australian brand) it meets all the specs(in fact exceeds the Ford specs)Does not matter which brand you use as I keep saying as long as it meets OR exceeds Ford specs, your engine will be fine.
