Replace spark plugs 17 plate focus Titanium X

Featured Replies

Hi had my service today and they recommend that I change my spark plugs 🤔 is this a job I could do myself ??? Or would you think it needs a garage???16440858668733031749830947956987.thumb.jpg.050107a06830f63583d05f0a12304ed1.jpg

It's not very difficult, more of a DIY job provided you have the tools.

I'd recommend one of those spark plug sockets with the rubber insert so that you can retrieve the plug from the well after you've unscrewed it.

I also like to apply a little bit of anti-sieze to the threads before installing the new ones.

I've been on you tube and they say it's recommended change at 30,000miles so don't know why they say manufacturers recommendation? Mines only done 20,000mile any advice

Titanium X is a trim level.  Which engine do you have?

Seems excessive 165 quid for 3 spark plugs ???

The 1.0 EcoBoost plugs are expensive compared to older cars plugs.  But at about £30 for the 3, that does seem like a high labour charge!

The reason for changing on time as well as distance is that they're obviously still working while idling or slow speed traffic etc, and if they're left too long they can seize into the head.  If you're handy with the spanners, there's no reason that you couldn't change them yourself.

Manufacturers recommendation is 37.5k miles or 3 years which ever is sooner.

As for replacing them , you need an 8 mm socket to remove the coil packs and smaller than normal spark plug socket of 14mm . ford recommend no antisieze compound on refitting( up to you if you do or don't. Good idea to use a torque wrench to finishing tightening correctly. 13nm

I used to have a Morris traveller and could do all the service myself but with these modern cars looks a bit daunting hence me looking on you tube

Gee,your not wrong on that one.I paid $43.00 for Ford OEM ones(These are actually manufactured by NGK) they are iridium,& this was for three.

There’s a special long reach socket, you can get for the ford eco boost engines. Did my f-I-L’s plugs a few years ago. Normal long reach sockets wouldn’t fit.

When were the last replaced? Should have been done on the 3rd yearly service or 37500 miles, as you’ve only done low miles your service interval will be done yearly. They say manufacturers recommendations because they either pull a number out of a hat or lots of testing in a big factory, can’t remember which.

You can change them whenever you like but it’s better to not exceed what the manufacturer recommends but, again you can do what you like.

How often did you replace the plugs on the Morris traveller? The process isn’t much different so you can do it yourself.

Morris traveler would have been yearly or 6000 miles from what I remember. Yes I'm that old to have worked at Austin rover dealer as apprentice.

And not just spark plugs, points ,condenser , air filter.

Pollen filter back then we're your hairs in your nose

So where did the 6000 miles come from and how often did he change them to think that 20k seems early, lol.

It does, if you’ve changed plugs before you can do it on this car.
