Trouble at the garage...

Featured Replies

I've had ongoing problems with the fuel return pipes on my Fusion. They're been done by a local mobile mechanic, lasted a week before one popped out and dumped 2 segments of fuel on my way home. The mechanic wasn't interested in remedy because his words 'it's too difficult'.

I've given it a go and had no success refitting the clips so got it towed to a local garage. The work was eventually done and I exchanged my £120 + £25 for a genuine leak off kit. Was a bit ***** off because rather than fitting the complete kit he just Frankensteined it and replaced what he thought was needed? Anyway, happyish because I was back on the road - for a little while. About 3 days after having the car back the diesel smell was  back and not long after an oil leak appeared. All came to a stop when it started haemorrhaging diesel on a day out. Last Wednesday it was towed to the garage and been their since.

Onto my question. The garage owner has said he'll sort the issues but if it comes back again with similar issues he's going to recharge me for the work, WTF? He's also throwing his toys about because I asked him to refit the 2 bolts at the back of the inlet manifold that weren't done last time because he couldn't get the manifold to reseat in the head and it doesn't matter if they're not fitted anyway? The second opinion I got suggested that they should be refitted because if not air can be sucked in and cause running issues?

It's all wearing a bit thin. Any thoughts?

If it's causing that much trouble I would take it to a Ford dealer and just pay the once and for all price.

Think I'd be finding another garage tbh.

At the worst give him the option to fix it properly and if he can't be bothered to do it right then go elsewhere and send him the bill and report to Trading standards if he fails on either part.

Thanks both.

Do you know what Bill, the £216 Ford quoted before Christmas seems quite tempting right now!

If it does breakdown again I'll look into your suggestion David, thanks!

Regarding the inlet manifold, if the gaskets don't seal could there be the potential for any kind of damage or running issues. My second opinion said that as the engine flexes it could create a gap and possibly draw air and or water which is bad, h didn't go into much more detail about it unfortunately. I'm just thinking if he digs the heels in at least I have something to argue.

Cowboys eh...

Over the years I've heard a few garages say that this nut or that part isn't needed or necessary, I say if it's not needed then the manufacturer wouldn't fit it as it costs money .

I've often wondered why there's a need to fit 5 wheel bolts to each wheel.

Maybe 4 would suffice perhaps even 3 at a push. Think of the manufacturing and labour costs that could be saved 🤔

Torque/weight/load, that's why lorries have about 20.

Believe me, if you could get away with three, Ford would fit three

And the expectation of performance models within the range...  A 1.0 99ps Focus doesn't 'need' 5 studs...

It was quite common up until 1998 for the quality cars that Citroen were renowned for like the "2CV", "Dyane", "Ami" to have only 3 studs 🤣

A 3 studded Citroen was good enough for Bond to take on the world in For your eyes only...

Not really.  If both had the same size discs and top speed then yeah, but the RS has 350mm discs and 170mph top speed, 1.0 has 258mm discs and 120mph top speed.  It's purely economy of scale fitting every Focus with 5 stud.  Means the hubs, brakes and wheels can all be used on any spec vehicle.

Believe me, if TVM could get away with three wheel nuts they would, they're obviously needed whether 99BHP or 300 or whatever it was
