ELMconfig errors PCM erased

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have been following the guide to retrofit cruise control to a 2008 Mk2.5 Focus 1.8 tdci.

On the final step of writing the updated BIN file to the PCM, I received an error (pic 1). The writing failed and no as warned, the car is immobilised.

i have tried  to restore using the original back up file however this also now comes up with an error. (Pic2)

Has anyone been in this situation before and can they offer some tips? I have ordered two different branded modified cables as I suspect maybe a cable related issue.

I am also fully charging the battery. It was fully charged at the start of the process, but reading the PCM took around 50 mins with ignition on so the battery was just under 12v when I tried to rewrite the new file. 2AA1908C-25A4-4268-940C-5828BFADAD89.thumb.jpeg.2c6b613c34ff0c76b96defedbee75c6e.jpeg

The following appears proper to attempting to restore the original PCM file 0C159677-4551-430A-B422-4742D733E4AE.thumb.jpeg.64896748fd92bc7d6797af9c47062cfe.jpeg

Hello Tom,

Firstly I'd use FORScan and the new vLinker FS lead. Then put the vehicle battery on charge and leave it on charge while programming.

You can use FORScan to download and install the "As Built" file direct from the Ford servers if you don't have a working back-up

This is the firmware corrupted, you will need a paid licence.

Only trouble is, if PCM isn't talking, due to being bricked, Forscan will not recognise it on initial connection. And Forscan will not be able to recover.

Did you/have you ever connected to Forscan before you attempted this with ELM config?

If you did, then you will have a profile stored and will be able to recover, but you will need a much better lead, as unofix mentioned (OBDLink EX or VCM even).

I think your best course of action is to contact people who are experienced with ELM config to help you restore your PCM.

It could be that you just don't have the correct settings in the app, or in the COM port settings in your PC, or you need a better lead?

Someone will advise

The battery needs to be fully charged BEFORE attempting and keep the charger connected to + terminal on battery but - terminal to body AT ALL TIMES, turn off other equipment too (Radio, heater, etc, etc)

Sorry, just to add:

Forscan will be able to help, but only if you're paid, as they will send you a profile of the same spec vehicle to use to recover your vehicle.

Or, if you know someone with exactly the same spec Focus as yours, you can connect to theirs and use that profile to recover your PCM.

Don't worry about keys, they are stored in the cluster.

And make sure you haven't got the cluster fault before you recover, as CAN network failures can cause this issue, run a CAN test on Forscan before you recover

Thanks for the replies. I have purchased two further additional cables and aM trying to restore my original PCM bin file now.

I did actually program a key to my car using forscan prior to attempting this cruise control disaster, so that could help?

Neither cable has been able to rewrite the PCM back to the backup file on ELMconfig

I have messaged Forscan for assistance.

Newest version of FORScan: https://forscan.org/download.html

New style/type of connecting lead 'vLinker FS' :

https://www.bmdiag.co.uk/forscan-diagnostic-cable-for-ford-vgate-vlinker-fs

OR from here: https://tunnelrat-electronics.fwscart.com/Vgate_vLinker_FS_USB/p4541936_21548171.aspx

Very important that you keep vehicle battery on charge while trying to programme. If battery voltage falls below 12.4V it can result in serious programming failures.

Thanks for the reply. I have the above cable and software however Forscan have replied and I cannot restore the PCM on there. Currently the Mk2 and Mk2.5 is not supported .

I have tried a different OBD cable however have ran into the same issue.

VLinker cable above doesn’t seem to worK with ELMconfig. I hoped with it being a better cable I would have some luck.

It seems now I am Stuck. I have a “bricked” PCM and at the moment - Unusable car.

Any further suggestions welcome

OBDLink EX works on ELMconfig, I'm sure
